While Thursday’s CBS and ABC morning shows focused on security plans for Sunday’s Super Bowl in Atlanta, NBC’s Today show hyped “controversies erupting on multiple fronts” ahead of the big game, including whining about left-wing former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick not being signed to an NFL team. 

After the network initially ignored Democratic Senator and 2020 presidential candidate Kamala Harris calling for the private health insurance industry to be abolished, on Wednesday, NBC’s Today show finally acknowledged how her radical proposal “sparked controversy.” The report also fretted over signs of “Democratic division” heading into the primary campaign.

It used to be that journalists didn’t need fire safety seminars to know they could get burned publishing stories that lacked facts or context. But when the original, deceptively edited video of Nathan Phillips and the Covington kids emerged, the press swaddled itself in oily rags, grabbed a Zippo and went full “Johnny Human Torch.”

After news broke around 6:30 p.m. Eastern on Monday that four narcotics officers were shot while trying to serve a warrant in Houston, over the next 24 hours, the three broadcast networks, CNN and Fox News Channel all gave substantial attenton to the story. But MSNBC has so far only given the dramatic event a total of 91 seconds in spite of being a 24-hour cable news channel.
