Christian Right Attacked, Liberal Stereotypes Mocked on Hulu's 'Difficult People'

Hulu’s Difficult People has a habit of cussing out anyone it disagrees with, and Tuesday’s episode did not stray from the practice.

In the episode titled “Sweet Tea,” Lola (Shakina Nayfack), the transgender waitress who works alongside main character Billy (Billy Eichner), gets together with three friends who all went through “gender conformation” surgery together, or as she puts it, “Got pussies together.” After one of them bravely asserts, “I just think women should support each other,” Lola responds, “Tell that to the trans-exclusionary radical feminists no better than Christian right motherfuckers.”

Wow, “motherfuckers”? Liberals hostile to the Christian right might be interested to learn that Christian non-profit organizations have provided more aid to the victims of Hurricane Harvey and Irma than FEMA. Also, in case you were wondering what in the world are trans-exclusionary radical feminists, they’re those crazy people who believe that women are born with XX chromosomes. And I guess they’re just as bad as those horrible, bigoted religious people.

However, the show still has its glimmers of hope. Earlier, Billy sits on the metro while a hilarious interaction plays out. The scene begins with a run-down, Bible-wielding man preaching about gay people as a cancer on society. In response, a flamboyant man begins singing loudly at him. A woman then yells at the singing man, “That song belongs to Leslie Uggams, stop racially appropriating it!” before she begins chanting, “Hey hey ho ho appropriation’s got to go!” Then, a woman who claims to be a performing artist releases a box full of crickets onto the metro.

The good news is that those liberal stereotypes are supposed to be viewed as absurd as releasing crickets on a metro. As a result, even the liberal, gay Billy decides he hates New York and want to leave. And for a show as liberal as Difficult People, calling Christians “motherfuckers” but then making fun of SJWs is about the best we can hope for.
