Anti-Religious Bias

The CW’s Jane the Virgin went the predictable crooked, corrupt Catholic Church route on Monday night.

Disgraced former CBS Evening News anchor Dan Rather was at it again on Tuesday pontificating on Facebook as he urged Americans and particularly journalists to rise up and not “remain seated or silent” against concerning aspects of President-elect Donald Trump’s agenda and neo-Nazis saluting Trump’s win (in another attempt to normalize their line of hate through free media). 

Scores of people on the left and right who are worthy of media censure. Yet, while many media outlets eviscerate Steve Bannon, people like gay activist and writer Dan Savage tend to get a pass. And rather than being called out for his vitriolic and lewd statements, Savage routinely serves as a guest on CNN and MSNBC broadcasts. 

To follow-up on the adulterous priest (which still continues by the way), Friday night’s episode of Fox's The Exorcist delivers yet another awful depiction of religious figures. This time, it is a nun who must be demeaned as she actually suggests “mercy killing” as an option.

“Not everything is about you being gay, Kenny!” Oh, how happy I was to hear those words finally spoken on ABC’s The Real O’Neals, Tuesday. Unfortunately, even when the show takes its attention off how gay Kenny O’Neal (Noah Galvin) is, they can’t seem to shake off being anti-Catholic, anti-conservative, or anti-anything decent. This episode focuses on taking down the sanctity of marriage.

Despite carrying the Denver Broncos to the playoffs in 2011, subsequently being cut from 3 NFL teams, and receiving constant media hostility, Tim Tebow’s faith was not shaken. Fox's show The Exorcist is much like its film predecessor in taking delight in how outrageously shocking it can go. Unfortunately, the exploits in an R-rated movie are apparently now suitable for a primetime television series. In this case, they spread out the story of a possessed girl over a full season with more conflicts from the priests and more gruesome demonic possession.

After refusing to report on New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan condemning the “offensive” and “patronizing” anti-Catholic rhetoric revealed in leaked e-mails from Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman John Podesta, on Friday, the hosts of NBC’s Today committed journalistic malpractice by continuing to ignore the controversy during an interview with the Church leader. 

After CBS and ABC ignored the WikiLeaks revelation that top Hillary Clinton staffers exchanged anti-Catholic rhetoric via e-mail and NBC only offered mere seconds to controversy, one would expect a major U.S. Catholic leader denouncing the comments would draw at least some media attention. The editorial in today's New York Times, "Victims of Priests' Abuse Face a Choice," must be challenged on several counts. Its principal focus is the new initiative by the Archdiocese of New York, the Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program. This program is designed to deal fairly with claims of clergy sexual abuse.  

It’s rare, but sometimes liberal and conservative journalists do agree on the problematic nature of media bias. On Tuesday evening, New York Times journalist Nicholas Kristof voiced his concern on Twitter about the “lack of religious diversity” in the media.
