In the past year leading up to the midterm elections, political ads on social media have been critical. No one understands this more than the Democrats. Between May 7 to October 16, according to the Atlantic, Facebook political spending was topped by Beto O’Rourke, the challenger to Senator Ted Cruz in Texas.

How can a tech company be neutral when almost all of its staff is anti-conservative? When Facebook Vice President for global public policy Joel Kaplan was spotted sitting behind Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, Facebook staff lost their collective minds.  

A numerous contingent of liberal, anti-Trump reporters recently made a point of traveling to Puerto Rico to produce “one-year anniversary” Hurricane María stories that were rife with content that deliberately either maligned or hid the magnitude of federal aid that is largely responsible for powering the island’s ongoing recovery.

Big tech companies want to help impact the upcoming midterm election. On National Voter Registration Day, several top social media/search media firms — including Google, Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat — urged users to register to vote.  

Several prominent conservative leaders on Tuesday authored an open letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions, calling on him to investigate “every aspect” of how Facebook, Twitter, and other social media outlets "interact with the public." They called for freedom, fairness, and an end to censorship on these platforms. The letter can be read below: 

Twitter and Facebook are eager to take down or block users who violate their terms of service … but only if they swing to the right of the spectrum. It’s hard to paint a positive picture of big tech companies, especially when it becomes apparent that they are manipulating users. The media don’t  care about online censorship -- unless it happens to them. The liberal site ThinkProgress cried foul after it was fact checked for a story it posted on Facebook involving Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. The original article said Kavanaugh would “kill Roe v. Wade.” Not only was ThinkProgress fact checked, but the article was fact checked by the conservative Weekly Standard.

During Wednesday’s Senate hearing concerning foreign influence on social media platforms, Twitter founder and CEO Jack Dorsey stated that his goal in combating the proliferation of fake or misleading accounts was to amplify the voices of active journalists on the site. That’s nice, but since Dorsey has admitted his company is “left-leaning,” we’re left to wonder which journalists he wants to…

It’s worth asking big tech companies whether they practice core American values on a global scale. In the Sept. 5, Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on social media, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) asked Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg whether their respective companies were built on “the tenet of freedom of expression.”
