Fallout from the #MeToo sexual harassment accusations that began in 2017 continued to play out on Wednesday, when a former PBS talk show host was ordered by a judge to reimburse a total of nearly $1.5 million. The ruling calls for Tavis Smiley -- who was suspended by PBS on December 13, 2017 -- to pay the network $1.486 million after accusations arose that he violated the “morals clause” in his contract by sexually assaulting several women who were guests or otherwise took part in episodes of his program.
The #MeToo movement accusing male celebrities of committing sexual harassment crimes is still playing out even thought we’re now in 2020, more than three years since the scandal started. The latest development came on Thursday, when a judge ruled against a motion to dismiss allegations regarding former talk show host Tavis Smiley, who was suspended by PBS after a report from an external investigator described his inappropriate behavior.
Tavis Smiley just wanted to remind viewers of all those Christian mass murderers. In 2010, seven years before he would be suspended for sexual misconduct allegations, the PBS host insisted that Christians go on murder sprees “every single day.” He bizarrely claimed the Columbine killers as an example of devout murderers.
At the close of 2017, no less than seven prominent male hosts and editors of influential government-sponsored radio and television shows are out of work amid claims of sexual harassment. According to their accusers, the alleged Malevolent Seven are powerful pervs and creeps who've been running wild at NPR and PBS for decades, sponsored and subsidized by taxpayers and corporate donors.
Okay, we have Charlie Rose...gone! Matt Lauer...gone! So who will be the next liberal celebrity to lose his career due to allegations of sexual misconduct?
Well, the answer appears to be Tavis Smiley. Today PBS announced it was suspending the talk show host for the same reason as many of his fellow celebrity liberals. Variety provides some of the details of his suspension in PBS Suspends ‘Tavis Smiley’ Following Sexual Misconduct Investigation:
At first blush, it would seem like politically alienating half the potential audience for your new movie is box-office madness. But when you think about it, a liberal actress talking to a left-wing host on a taxpayer-financed liberal network more or less founded by the liberal president who is the subject of your movie doesn’t have much to fear. The chances of a conservative watching Tavis Smiley are pretty much nil.
As liberal playright and Vagina Monologues creator Eve Ensler appeared as a guest on Wednesday's Tavis Smiley show on PBS, she and host Smiley ruminated over why so many women voted to make Donald Trump President in spite of his history of harassing women, with the two drawing a parallel between women and blacks who are "self-loathing" or have "self-hatred."
On Friday's Tavis Smiley show, on display for PBS viewers was the latest in a parade of mostly left-wing guests getting to promote their liberal views as author Sasha Polakow-Suransky of the Open Society Foundations promoted his book -- Go Back Where You Came From -- that was critical of right-wing political movements in Europe and in the U.S. reacting against too much immigration. At one point in the interview, he went into hyperbole as he suggested that right-wing politicians are just a step away from being like Osama bin Laden as he pointed out that an outright bin Laden would not be able to get elected.
On Tuesday, PBS's Tavis Smiley show hosted two guests to discuss the issue of "white rage" in America in the age of Donald Trump. So did the taxpayer-funded network hold a balanced discussion with two opposing points of view? Of course not. True to form, the show was merely a conservative-free zone with two left-wing guests joining the left-wing host to go after Republicans with charges of "white nationalism," "white supremacy," and efforts to "move African-Americans back in their place."
On the September 13, edition of his PBS show, Tavis Smiley invited on singer David Crosby and the '60s era hippie trashed Donald Trump as an “imbecile” and “orange nightmare.”
Appearing as a guest on Monday's Tavis Smiley show on PBS, liberal actor Martin Sheen claimed that the United States is to blame for causing so many immigrants to leave Central American countries and travel to the U.S. as he complained about past interventions in some of those countries. The liberal actor concluded that "we're looking at what we have wrought."
Twice this week, PBS's Tavis Smiley show has hosted guests from the far-left The Nation magazine, giving them an unchallenged forum to promote their views of the Trump administration and Republicans. On Tuesday, John Nichols -- promoting his book Horsemen of the Trumpocalypse -- fearmongered about "militant anti-immigration" Attorney General Jeff Sessions having a "nefarious" record on civil rights. He went on to warn of the "awful things" that could be done by the Trump White House that "could reverse decades -- our entire lifetimes, it could reverse the progress that we've made."
