During the weekend of Aug. 4-5 (and the preceding Friday night), 12 Chicagoans were shot dead, and 62 others were shot and wounded, the Chicago Tribune reported. Before last week's mayhem, 1,718 Chicagoans had been shot since the beginning of the year, and 306 had been murdered. Adding to this tragedy is the fact that Chicago's clearance rate is less than 15 percent.

On Saturday, CNN was true to form in showing more interest in stories that reflect negatively on how police officers do their jobs while ignoring those that show law enforcement work sympathetically. On Friday, after its early morning anchors promised "details throughout the day here on CNN" regarding a federal agent being attacked in Chicago, CNN dropped all interest in the story after spending only 21 seconds on the tragic event. By contrast, FNC repeatedly updated viewers on the ATF agent who was shot in the face while trying to help local police fight against gang activity.

On Friday's CNN Newsroom, during a discussion after President Donald Trump's speech to the FBI National Academy, host Poppy Harlow fretted over the President calling out the high murder rate in Chicago as she suggested there was "hypocrisy" in trying to punish the sanctuary city while complaining about the high crime rate.

In biblical times, a sanctuary city was a place where someone who had committed unintentional manslaughter could find refuge from "the avenger of blood." If the offender left the sanctuary city, he could be set upon by a relative of the dead person and killed. No sanctuary was available to anyone who committed murder with malice aforethought.

Minutes after President Trump concluded his remarks on Thursday afternoon at the GOP retreat, MSNBC Live host Craig Melvin informed guests and viewers that it was “awkward” and he felt “uncomfortable” that Trump and a member of the audience blamed the violence in Chicago on Democrats.   

Anchoring MSNBC’s 1 p.m. ET hour on Thursday, host Craig Melvin acknowledged that had the races been reversed in the brutal Chicago kidnapping and assault broadcast on Facebook Live, the media coverage would be very different.
