Limbaugh Blasts Media at MRC’s 30th Anniversary Gala: 'They're Dead Wrong, They're Dead Stupid'

Legendary radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh recalled how he first heard of the Media Research Center when he saw Brent Bozell quoted in National Review. Limbaugh also explained his success in radio, noting how both he and Donald Trump built a “bond” with their audiences, before warning of the threat posed by leftists who want to silence conservatives.

During his introductory remarks at the MRC’s 30th Anniversary Gala Thursday night, Bozell thanked Limbaugh for his steadfast support of the MRC over the past three decades: “Rush has been at our side from the very start, giving oxygen to our work to millions of his followers on a regular basis.” Bozell went on to hail Limbaugh as “the leader of the conservative movement.”

Limbaugh began his address to the audience of nearly 900 conservatives gathered at the National Building Museum in Washington D.C. by applauding the hilarious clips of outrageous media bias featured at the event, but also warned: “They believe this. We laugh. It’s a problem, they are this stupid. They are this uncurious....I have never encountered a group of people in a business that...is populated by so many people that literally don’t know what they’re talking about.”

“And it’s a problem because the Democrat Party’s not running the show anymore, they are. They are giving the Democrat Party marching orders. I think the Democrat Party still is just an arm of the media now,” he told the crowd.

Sharing an anecdote about how he first became aware of the MRC, Limbaugh described reading his first copy of National Review back in 1987:

I had heard of William F. Buckley, he was an idol, I dreamed of meeting him someday....So I subscribed to National Review and in my first issue – now this is – this is the year Brent started, it’s 1987. In the first issue there was a little three-dot column that began each issue. And there was a line, “Brent Bozell at the Media Research Center says,” and it was some analysis of what’s going on at the time in the media. I said that’s brilliant, whatever it was, I said it was brilliant.

Later in speech, Limbaugh explained why he knew, before many others, that Donald Trump would win the presidency:

I knew that Trump was going to excel when I lot of people didn’t because I know the bond. I saw those rallies and I said I’ve been there and done that, it enthused me....I saw the size of the crowds and everybody on the left and in the Hillary camp was missing it, the media was pooh-poohing it, and to me, none of what is happened is a surprise because I have had the experience I have. I understand the bond, I appreciate it, I am grateful for it. I am deeply moved that I have benefitted from it.

Praising the MRC’s work over the years, Limbaugh touted Bozell’s affect on the liberal media: “Brent got on their nerves because they are above criticism. They are above it, you can’t criticize them, you can’t question them.”

“And Brent Bozell and the Media Research Center, and now NewsBusters, are...a fundamental element of my show prep everyday. And they always have been, they always will be,” he proclaimed.

Thanking MRC analysts for wading through countless hours of biased news coverage, Limbaugh remarked: “I saw a little pull quote from Levin on the big screens tonight crediting the Media Research Center, ‘They watch that crap so we don’t have to.’ Boy, is that ever true. Folks, I can’t watch it anymore!”

He again cautioned the audience about the danger of the liberal press:

You saw these clips tonight, it’s stupid. And the problem is, these people have influence....They believe it. They’re killing everything they touch, they’re corrupting everything they touch, and they’re destroying it. We laugh at it because we need the relief, but they believe it. And they’re dead serious, they’re dead wrong, they’re dead stupid, they’re brain dead, and they are a problem. And they’ve got to be – in the arena of ideas – they have got to be beaten.

“And here again, Brent Bozell, who knows how many people he is arming with information. Because nobody, nobody can stand to watch as much of this stuff as Brent makes his people do,” he added.

Limbaugh concluded with another note of gratitude:

And I cannot thank all of you enough. And again, to Brent Bozell and Media Research [Center], I hope they keep doing this as long as they want to because it’s always gonna be needed, worthwhile, entertaining, a great combination. Thank you all, folks, very much. I love you all.

Here are excerpts of Limbaugh’s remarks at the September 21 MRC Gala Featuring the Dishonors Awards:

BRENT BOZELL: I’ve known Rush for many, many years. In fact, both of our enterprises are celebrating our 30th anniversaries. Rush has been at our side – [applause] – Rush has been at our side from the very start, giving oxygen to our work to millions of his followers on a regular basis. The conservative movement has many heroes. Men and women without whom our cause would not exist. How do measure their value? Simple: Ponder a world without them. Do that now with a man who didn’t want any special recognition tonight. Were it not for talk radio, the conservative movement would not exist today. That is an indisputable fact....Without this man, we wouldn’t be here tonight, not this organization, perhaps not any organization represented here. What higher compliment can I give than to say that this man does deserve his own category as the leader of the conservative movement? I shudder to think of a world without him. I jump for joy knowing we’re celebrating our 30th anniversary with him, because that’s how it should be. Ladies and gentlemen, Rush Limbaugh.

RUSH LIMBAUGH: The reason I didn’t want to be recognized is this is the 30th anniversary of the Media Research Center. And you know, we watch these clips here tonight folks, and we laugh. They believe this. We laugh. It’s a problem, they are this stupid. They are this uncurious. They are – I mean, I have never encountered a group of people in a business that is so, for lack of a better [word], wealthy, that is populated by so many people that literally don’t know what they’re talking about. And it’s a problem because the Democrat Party’s not running the show anymore, they are. They are giving the Democrat Party marching orders. I think the Democrat Party still is just an arm of the media now.

(...)

LIMBAUGH: It’s Brent’s party, it’s his event, and this is an achievement. I’ll tell you how I first heard of Brent Bozell. I’m in Sacramento, California and I’m doing my radio show and I’m dreaming of advancing. Like everybody in radio, you move by moving to a bigger market. And by hook and by crook I got my national opportunity. But before it happened, I had heard of William F. Who is Brent Bozell? I had no idea who Brent Bozell was. And I later found out he was William F. Buckley’s nephew. And that’s how I became aware of all of this.

(...)

LIMBAUGH: I knew that Trump was going to excel when I lot of people didn’t because I know the bond. But I have been – you know, I played a role in creating it too. I’m part of the bond. And it helps me to understand when people are going to succeed and when they’re not. When things are gonna work, when they’re not.

(...)

LIMBAUGH: Part of the preparation that made all this possible – and I hate to keep piling on because Bozell looks like the savior of the world tonight – but he really – folks, I got to know him after seeing that little three-dotter “Brent Bozell.” I ran into Michael Kingsley at Crossfire once. He said, “What do think of media bias?” I said, “I think it’s impossible not to be biased, Michael. I think it’s absolutely absurd that we tell people who are educated, who are caring, to act like they don’t care. Everybody cares about the outcome.” He said, “That’s brilliant, why don’t you tell your buddy R. Brent Bozo.” I said, “It’s L. Brent Bozell.” “Well, whoever, tell him.” Brent got on their nerves because they are above criticism. They are above it, you can’t criticize them, you can’t question them. And Brent Bozell and the Media Research Center, and now NewsBusters, are an incremental – not incremental – but a fundamental element of my show prep everyday. And they always have been, they always will be.

I saw – I saw a little pull quote from Levin on the big screens tonight crediting the Media Research Center, “They watch that crap so we don’t have to.” Boy, is that ever true. Folks, I can’t watch it anymore. I literally can’t. I stopped watching cable at night, any of it, because all it did was make me mad. Climate change, all this stuff they say about Trump, it’s ludicrous. You saw these clips tonight, it’s stupid. And the problem is, these people have influence. And what they think is exactly what’s being taught on college campuses.

(...)

LIMBAUGH: It’s been the greatest thing in the world to be part of. To be part of this, to be part of the conservative movement, which I consider to be the last chance this country has. And to be here in your 30th anniversary, to be part of this, to be recognized by you and Mr. Bozell, it’s one of the greatest things that has ever happened. I can’t thank you all enough, I appreciate your time. It’s been a great night, this is hilarious.

But don’t forget, they believe it....They believe it.

And here again, Brent Bozell, who knows how many people he is arming with information. Because nobody, nobody can stand to watch as much of this stuff as Brent makes his people do. And I’m telling you, it is, it’s a heck of a lot easier to read summaries of it than to watch this stuff....

So a sincere thanks to Brent Bozell and his family, they have been great to me during my entire career. And as has most everybody in the movement. And especially you and all the people in my audience. I’ve enjoyed the beauty of success much more than I ever dreamed I would accomplish. I’ve been blessed much than I ever thought I deserved. And I cannot thank all of you enough. And again, to Brent Bozell and Media Research [Center], I hope they keep doing this as long as they want to because it’s always gonna be needed, worthwhile, entertaining, a great combination. Thank you all, folks, very much. I love you all.
