CNN's Costello: 'Old, White, Rich' Labels of Hillary 'Really Harsh'

February 11th, 2016 6:10 PM

Carol Costello spotlighted a young leftist's disdain for Hillary Clinton on Thursday's CNN Newsroom: "I talked to one young feminist — young woman — who said Hillary Clinton is just an old, white, rich person. Why should I listen to her? And that sounds really harsh, but young people are gravitating around Bernie Sanders because they like his idealistic message." [video below]

Costello brought on former Obama advisor and Clinton supporter Robert Wolf for his response to the Democratic presidential race in the wake of the New Hampshire primary. The anchor brought up the issue of "young voters" near the end of the segment with Wolf and cited the feminist's dismissal of the former secretary of state.

The Clinton supporter noted that Senator Sanders is "doing an incredible job with the millennials and getting out the vote; and he's popular; and his messaging works — in the sense of, here's free education and here's free health care." However, Wolf asserted that his candidate would ultimately pick up the millenial vote: "I actually think she will also get the young turnout. But today, Bernie's done a better job. We need to improve."

The transcript of the relevant portion of the Robert Wolf segment from the February 11, 2016 edition of CNN Newsroom:

CAROL COSTELLO: Let's talk about young voters for just a second—

ROBERT WOLF, HILLARY CLINTON SUPPORTER: Yeah—

COSTELLO: Because I talked to one young feminist — young woman — who said Hillary Clinton is just an old, white, rich person. Why should I listen to her? And that sounds really harsh, but young people are gravitating around Bernie Sanders because they like his idealistic message.

WOLF: You know, he's — he's doing an incredible job with the millennials and getting out the vote; and he's popular; and his messaging works — in the sense of, here's free education and here's free health care.

I think, at the end of the day, though, we've only been in two states. Yes, he's done a good — a good job with the — the young — and I think that's a good thing, by the way. For us to win as the Democratic Party, we actually need the young voter turnout—

COSTELLO: That's right—

WOLF: I mean, with the President, it was incredibly important. I actually think she will also get the young turnout. But today, Bernie's done a better job. We need to improve.
