Joe Scarborough Frets Over Trump and McConnell Shaping Courts for ‘Next 50 Years’

September 19th, 2019 10:18 AM

Joe Scarborough still occasionally claims to be a conservative. But based on his rant this morning, it sure sounds like Joe would prefer Supreme Court appointees in the mold of RBG/Sotomayor rather than Gorsuch/Kavanaugh.

On today's Morning Joe, Scarborough fretted that if President Trump and Mitch McConnell are successful, they will "shape the judiciary for the next 50 years." Scarborough expressed his concern in the context of criticizing Joe Kennedy for launching a Dem primary campaign against incumbent Sen. Ed Markey in Massachusetts.  Scarborough worried that money spent on that campaign will divert funds that could be used to defeat President Trump.

Scarborough also urged Democrat presidential candidates who are languishing in the polls to drop out and run for Senate. "At some point, put your country first," implored Joe. So for Scarborough, putting your country first is building a Dem Senate majority that can confirm liberal Supreme Court Justices? Here's his rant:

Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump, if they control the Senate and win, will shape the judiciary for the next 50 years. They’re already shaping it for the next generation. I mean, Democrats have to start getting responsible. There are people in these presidential polls that are sitting at 0%, 0%, when they could get elected senator in their home states, in red states. And they’re not moving. At some point, put your country first

Karine Jean-Pierre, an MSNBC analyst and spokesperson for far-left MoveOn.org, heartily agreed with Scarborough's take. Strange political bedfellow for "conservative" Joe!

Here's the transcript.

JOE SCARBOROUGH: This is just sort of a random question about a Senate race that popped up yesterday, a primary. I wonder what your reaction was to this when I read that Joe Kennedy was running against Ed Markey. I just sat there and I was like, why? And it’s almost like, I don’t know, I’ve always felt like anybody that wants to run and get ahead, that’s fine.

But in the year of Donald Trump, every dollar that is spent on that primary will be a dollar not spent on trying to defeat Donald Trump. Every dollar spent on that primary will be a dollar that will not be available to defeat Mitch McConnell. Every dollar spent in that primary will be a dollar spent and not maintaining the Democrats very tenuous hold on controlling the House of Representatives. Why now does Joe Kennedy decide he wants to take out one of the most progressive, one of the most respected Democratic voices in the Senate, who matches his constituents in Massachusetts?

. . .

We have Democrats running in states picking Senate fights they shouldn’t pick and we have Democrats sitting on the bench in other states where they need to get involved.

MIKA BRZEZINSKI: Or running for president!.

SCARBOROUGH: Or running for president. because Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump, if they control the Senate and win, will shape the judiciary for the next 50 years. They’re already shaping it for the next generation. I mean, Democrats have to start getting responsible. There are people in these presidential polls that are sitting at 0%, 0%, when they could get elected senator in their home states, in red states. And they’re not moving. At some point, put your country first.
