'View' Fangirls Over 'Brave' Teen Taking 'a Stand' Against Texas Abortion Law

June 3rd, 2021 2:46 PM

The liberal media is in love with a Dallas high school student who used her valedictorian speech to wail about a Texas law restricting abortions. Of course, the hosts of The View were enamored as well with the “brave” teen “making a stand” holding up "democracy" and “speaking truth to power” ie: the Republican party.

Moderator Whoopi Goldberg hailed the student “ditch[ing] the speech her school approved her to make to take a stand against the state's latest anti-abortion law,” before prompting her co-hosts with gooey questions.

“Well, we're always telling young people to figure out where they stand and make a stand. Sunny, do you think this was the place for her to go off script?” she asked co-host Sunny Hostin.

Hostin, a self-professed Catholic who thinks Jesus would lead pride parades and defends abortion even though she says she’s “pro-life,” lauded the young woman upholding “democracy” by exercising the “First Amendment:”

Absolutely, I do. I mean she's the valedictorian of the school. That means she's the best and the brightest in that class. I don't think that there's a place for censorship anywhere. This country is about freedom of speech. We talk so much about the First Amendment. I understand in this case the school had approved her speech and she didn't, you know, speak in the way that was approved. She decided to go off script and talk about something that was very important to her. I think at this time in our country our voices are so important and especially the voices of our young people because without their voices our democracy is nothing but for that. So I applaud her.

All of this was quite ironic, since Hostin herself has repeatedly butted heads with Meghan McCain in the past year over free speech and “cancel culture.” Time and time again, Hostin has gone against free speech that she didn’t like, saying there is no such thing as “cancel culture” but “accountability culture.”

Joy Behar and Ana Navarro also framed the valedictorian’s speech as a win for the younger generation. Behar strangely argued that pro-life people should vote Democrat because the number of abortions go down under Democrat presidents?

ANA NAVARRO: ...I think it's so much part of being a young person and speaking truth to power and being anti-establishment. I love what this represents. Whether you agree with the topic and the substance of what she was saying or not. The truth is no generation is going to be as impacted by this new law in Texas as much as her generation…

....

JOY BEHAR: Well, I think she was fantastic. Let's talk about the subject for one second. CDC data shows during the last 30 years abortion rates have fallen the most under democratic presidents. Okay. Reagan had abortions were 24 out of 1,000. Under Obama they were 12.5 out of 1,000. If you're pro-choice or pro-life you should vote for Democrats because under Democrats you'll see few fewer abortions. The thing about this, I feel like the young people are getting their act together…

But co-host Sara Haines was the most effusive, beaming like a proud parent and even admitting she would “have been so proud to be this girl's mother, standing there, applauding what she did. I absolutely think this is everything you hope for in our young people.

Haines raved, “She took the mic and that platform and she just dropped it right there. I would hope I would have been brave enough to do something like that.”

She added, “You want them to be resilient and brave and speak out when no one else is speaking,” and the speech gave her hope for the next generation: “This is someone that gave me hope for the future. I loved every minute of it.”

As you may be wondering, the sole pro-life host, Meghan McCain, was absent from today’s show, so there was only one ‘view’ present.

It shows what the media’s priorities are, when every year they largely ignore the massive gathering of pro-life young people at the March for Life in Washington, D.C. Yet at the same time, they’ll give all kinds of attention and praise to one young woman abusing her school’s platform to give a political message fear mongering about women’s rights under attack by the GOP.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: She ditched the speech her school approved her to make to take a stand against the state's latest anti-abortion law…

...Well, we're always telling young people to figure out where they stand and make a stand. Sunny, do you think this was the place for her to go off script?

SUNNY HOSTIN: Absolutely, I do. There are going to be a lot of people that disagree with her and there are going to be a lot of people that agree with her. It's her voice and her time. She used it wisely I think.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Very good. Ana, do you respect the move she made?

ANA NAVARRO: You know, I do. By the same token, I do think that valedictorian speeches are supposed to be inspiring, inclusive. I do love when people go rogue giving speeches and do the unexpected. I think it's so much part of being a young person and speaking truth to power and being anti-establishment. I love what this represents. Whether you agree with the topic and the substance of what she was saying or not. The truth is no generation is going to be as impacted by this new law in Texas as much as her generation. It's something that is top of mind for her. I think sometimes school authorities get tied up in knots trying to control teenagers and what they're going to say. I saw this story about another graduation that I loved. It was so preposterous and ridiculous. This kid was graduating and they were not going to allow him to walk down to get his diploma because he was wearing white bottom shoes. So his mentor gave him a pair of shoes he was wearing. He shuffled down the stage in shoes two sizes too big. Those type of things are ridiculous. You can't control teenagers. Let them graduate and have their say.

GOLDBERG: Joy, what do you think about this?

JOY BEHAR: Well, I think she was fantastic. Let's talk about the subject for one second. CDC data shows during the last 30 years abortion rates have fallen the most under democratic presidents. Okay. Reagan had abortions were 24 out of 1,000. Under Obama they were 12.5 out of 1,000. If you're pro-choice or pro-life you should vote for Democrats because under Democrats you'll see few fewer abortions. The thing about this, I feel like the young people are getting their act together. I see it in the climate change activism and I see it in the Republican party. Republicans under 30 were twice as likely than those over 45 to believe Biden was the winner. In 2020 Half of Republicans under 30 left the party from 2015 to March of 2017. I mean, we're looking at a whole generation of Republican kids who are saying good-bye to this QAnon party that has evolved in the past four or five years. I salute that and I salute this girl.

GOLDBERG: Sara, did she do what we encourage young people to do? We always say, listen, you have to take a look and see where you fit in the world. Did she make her point?

SARA HAINES: She made her point. She took the mic and that platform and she just dropped it right there. I would hope I would have been brave enough to do something like that. I don't know. Her message, the fact that she -- clearly she's the valedictorian. She graduated number one. She's the best and brightest. Sometimes those people have the hardest time breaking from authority. Yet she took that moment to do something. Like Joy mentioned Greta Thunberg being so young. The Parkland students. Malala. These are everything you want your kids to be. I try to be consistent intellectually and say what if her message had been the opposite? Because I agree with her message 110 percent. And I stay in the same place. You just want kids to be able to fight back. They're going to face adversity and they’re going to be uncomfortable. They're going to be scared. The world is going to come for them. You want them to be resilient and brave and speak out when no one else is speaking. I would have been so proud to be this girl's mother, standing there, applauding what she did. I absolutely think this is everything you hope for in our young people. We often -- every generation complains about the one behind them. This generation doesn't know how to work, all we do is that. All they do is eat avocado toast. This is someone that gave me hope for the future. I loved every minute of it.

GOLDBERG: Well, I think it's really important for people to stand up and talk about how they feel. Whether she was pro or anti, if her points made you think, then it's worthwhile. You know, whether you agree or not, the idea of being able to be an individual with a point of view and not being afraid to say this is what I feel and this is how this affects me, either way. So It's not emotional. This is -- these are the facts and Joy is right. Abortion has fallen mightily. And all the folks in Texas had to do was look it up. Look it up. You will see and you will also see that our birth rates have gone down considerably as well. That I don't know if everybody is happy about that, but that’s also happening. You just got to look and the information is there.
