MSNBC.com Trolls Believers with 'Is God Anti-Capitalist?' Headline

August 19th, 2015 6:30 PM

If we gave out awards for the most trollish headline of the day, the one for today would probably go to MSNBC.com.

"Is God anti-capitalist?" asked the teaser headline (screen capture at bottom of blog post) on the Lean Forward network's Web page. "Islamic leaders are only the latest to blame the 'relentless pursuit of economic growth' for plunging the world into a state of corruption and ecological ruin."

Clicking the teaser brings readers to a story by Tony Dokoupil headlined, "Islamic leaders join growing religious outcry over climate change." Here's how he opens his story:

Every religion has a tradition of respect for the God-given natural world. But the summer of 2015 has become a surprise season of revival for these oft-ignored lessons in creation care.

Jews, Catholics, Protestants, Muslims and Buddhists have all heard a fresh call for stepped-up guardianship of the planet. In the process, many religious leaders have broken an uneasy peace with the marketplace, attacking the great wheel of capitalism—once trusted to pull us all skyward—for plunging the world into a state of corruption, injustice and ecological ruin.

Of course, those same religious traditions historically have been, well, staunchly pro-life, but don't expect MSNBC to wonder "Is God against abortion?"
