Two Years Later, Luis Gutierrez Still Mad That MRC Latino Busted Him

In case you missed it, Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) took time during a recent speech on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives in order to bemoan MRC Latino's coverage of statements he made to Telemundo two years ago with regard to sanctuary city legislation.

Here's what Gutiérrez said during his floor remarks on the sanctuary city legislation that recently passed the House:

CONGRESSMAN LUIS GUTIERREZ: ...while talking about various immigration issues in Spanish with Telemundo, a quote was included in a story about Kate Steinle's killing. After it was aired, right wing groups circulated it, alleging it was proof that I was insensitive to the Steinle family which in fact I was not speaking about Kate Steinle at the time.

I don't know, but it sure sounded like it when Gutiérrez was asked about proposals to eradicate sanctuary cities by then-Telemundo correspondent Janet Rodríguez for a report that aired on July 11, 2015 (you can read MRC Latino's full report on that story here):

REP. LUIS GUTIERREZ: Every time a little thing like this happens, they use the most extreme example to say it must be eliminated.

If Gutiérrez wasn't referencing Kate Steinle when asked about sanctuary city policy a mere nine days after her murder then what, exactly, was the "little thing" that happened? To be clear, the "it" referenced above is sanctuary city policy, which Gutiérrez supports.

When you assign meaning to "this" and "it", a reasonable viewer could translate Gutiérrez' remarks as: every time a little thing like an illegal immigrant commiting a horrendous crime happens, they use the most extreme example to say sanctuary city policy must be eliminated.

Gutierrez' remarks do not survive basic scrutiny, and one is left to believe that the gentleman from Humboldt Park is still smarting at being busted for speaking more openly for Spanish-language media than he might do for their Anglophone counterparts.

P.S.: Luis Gutierrez worships and defends convicted terrorists.
