CW Drama: ICE Will ‘Come for’ Citizens After They ‘Run Out of Brown People to Round Up’

The CW’s teen drama All American is back for its eighth and final season and wasted no time reminding us that they’re famous for pushing leftist propaganda. Episode 6, “Rebel Without a Pause,” delivered a cartoonish, anti-ICE storyline so detached from reality it would be laughable if the message weren’t so dangerous.

The ABC After School Special-style episode portrays ICE as racist “kidnappers” who will eventually come for legal citizens after they “run out of brown people to round up.”

Yes, they really said that.

The episode centers on SJW Amina (Ella Simone Tabu), who is suspended from her private school after criticizing administrators for staying silent when an illegal-alien janitor, Julio is “kidnapped” by ICE in front of his family. Her article reads in part:

…a community that includes Julio Martinez, his wife, Angela, and their six-year-old son. Julio works in the custodial department at the Dinsburg School, and he was a welcoming face when I transferred… I saw Julio and his family being approached by four masked ICE agents. I watched as Angela cried in disbelief when Julio was tackled to the ground. I watched as their six-year-old screamed for their father as he was being kidnapped in broad daylight… As a black girl in America, I believe what Jeannetta Sagan said. Silence in the face of injustice is complicity. In my silence, family was torn apart. I refuse to be silent now, and I refuse to stand by while powerful institutions that claim to be diverse and inclusive remain silent during these targeted attacks. I refuse.

Actually, injustice happens when laws aren’t enforced. A country can’t remain safe if its laws are treated as optional. And if people like Amina want to prevent situations like Julio’s, they should encourage and help people to enter the country legally.  

While suspended, Amina works at South Crenshaw High as a teacher’s assistant for her father “Preach” (Kareem J. Grimes) and it’s there the storyline becomes more fantastical. ICE arrives with a warrant to search the school, despite Homeland Security clearly stating agents do not target or raid schools.

Naturally, Amina decides to interfere:

 

 

Amina: Something's not right.

Khalil: Yo, your pops wanted us to chill, wanted you to chill, Amina.

Macy: A’ight, check it. We in the South Crenshaw hallways and why is ICE all up in here like they got class next period.

Khalil: Are you seriously going live right now?

Macy: The revolution will be televised and streamed.

Ron: OK, I am legally hype. I see you.

Macy: AB Burns Tucker. That's my shero. Clock it.

ICE Agents: Let's go.

Khalil: It's starting to feel like a damn invasion, guys,

Amina: Grab whoever you can that's trying to avoid these agents and get them to my dad's classroom.

Khalil: Hold up. What are you about to do?

Amina: Buy you some time. You guys aren't supposed to be here.

Agent Woodford: Young lady, we're federal agents. We go wherever our orders dictate.

Amina: Aren't you supposed to be out finding criminals? Does this look like a criminal enterprise to you? It's a high school full of kids trying to get an education that you're currently disrupting. Oh wait, I forgot. Destroying the education system was part of the plan anyway, so you could feed your school to prison pipeline.

Agent Woodford: Ma'am, you need to stand down.

Ms. Perez: Look, everyone, just calm down. Amina is one of our brightest students. She just gets a little passionate.

Amina: Ms. Perez, I got this.

Ms. Perez: They're just here to serve a warrant, and they will be on their way.

Agent Woodford: Ma'am. I'm gonna need to see some ID.

Ms. Perez: Excuse me. I'm a teacher here. My purse is in my office.

Agent Woodford: So, you don't have ID.

Ms. Perez: As a matter of fact, I do, and I have a permit under deferred action for Childhood Arrivals.

Agent Woodford: We're gonna need you to come with us.

Ms. Perez: Come with you where? Get your hands off of me. I already told you I'm allowed to be here legally under DACA.

Amina: Let her go.

Preach: Hey, that's a 16-year-old girl. Don't you dare touch her.

So, we’re supposed to believe ICE is trying to destroy schools as part of a school to prison pipeline? Alrighty then.

After barricading themselves inside Preach’s classroom, Amina warns every black, legal citizen in the room, “If you think they're only coming for them and they aren’t coming for us next, you got it twisted.” Because apparently federal immigration enforcement is just one step away from rounding up American citizens. Sure, Jan.

The message gets even more absurd when KJ (Nathaniel Logan McIntyre), a student at Beverly High (South Crenshaw’s more affluent and predominantly white rival school) states, “ They may be at South Crenshaw today, but they can easily be at Beverly tomorrow. What do you think is going to happen when they run out of brown people to round up?”

To the show’s credit, KJ’s father warns him to keep the protest he’s participating in peaceful, albeit so that ICE can’t “hijack the narrative.” Adding to the race-baiting propaganda, we’re introduced to Agent Landry, a laughable Hollywood caricature of a racist ICE agent:

 

 

Agent Woodford: You know, it’s only time before we get our hands on that warrant. You can't stall forever.

Preach: Where's your compassion? Those are scared little kids in that classroom, including my daughter. They're not terrorists. They're not violent criminals. They're kids.

Agent Landry: The reports I got, those kids have been behaving like criminals. They ain't got nothing to hide why’re they barricading themselves in that room?

Preach: Because they're scared.

Agent Landry: Well, either way, we'll get ‘em out. This type of behavior ain't welcome in this country.

Macy: Okay, check it. We're still cramped up in here like double D's in an A cup, but my girl Amina Sims is standing 10 toes down for human rights. They say that we're the leaders of tomorrow. Well, tomorrow is now, and it's on us to decide what our future looks like. So, find your inner Amina Sims, and don't just talk about it, be about it.

Amina: Auntie Coop, please call me back. I need you. I don't know how much longer No, no, no, no…

Khalil: You okay?

Amina: I can't reach Coop, and my phone just died. It feels like we're running out of time.

Khalil: Figure this out like you always do.

Amina: I don't currently have a great record of success, and there's no clear way out of this. Khalil, I can't open that door because if I do, I'm complicit again to everyone getting taken away. But if I don't, I'm leaving my dad out there alone to fight a battle with those agents.

Khalil: I hear where you're coming from. Whatever you decide, I got you. We all do.

It would be nice if viewers were shown how many dangerous criminals have been removed by ICE to keep us safe, or that most ICE agents are good people who put their lives at risk to protect ours. But that would be inconvenient for the show’s obvious goal of dehumanizing agents.

No anti-ICE propaganda can be complete without a sob story, which Ms. Perez helps deliver:

 

 

Ron: We here putting ourselves in danger and for what?

Amina: Because they need our help.

Ron: Yo, I don't know who's illegal and who's not. This ain't my business.

Amina: No human being is illegal. Every human in this country deserves to be treated with respect and due process. Not hunted down and rounded up like cattle. Yo, these are our classmates, teachers, friends, neighbors, they are a part of our community. and you don't turn your back on your community, not now and not ever.

Ms. Perez: I came to this country when I was 8 years old because my parents wanted a better life for their family They instilled in me the importance of education and told me that if I just kept my head down and worked hard, the American dream was achievable. But because we were undocumented, that meant living in the shadows for years. Until DACA came along and gave me the opportunity to get a driver's license and go to college and get an amazing job all without fear. Yes, technically we're undocumented, but I love this country with every fiber of my being even though it doesn't always love me back. And now today, I can be ripped away from my young daughter who was born here without even getting to talk to her. I won't judge my parents for entering this country without legal documentation because they were trying to give me a better life. but I took the steps to do it the right way. And those agents still didn't care. They took one look at our brown skin, and that was the only status that mattered to them.

If your family really wanted to give you a better life and believed in hard work, they would have brought you here legally instead of putting you at risk. Now, you’re interfering with a federal investigation and want to use brown privilege as a Get Out of Jail Free card? It doesn’t work that way. No one is above the law.

And what about the real-life tragedies of Angel Families who’ve lost loved ones to the hands of illegal alien criminals? Those are the true heartbreaking stories that aren’t being shown but desperately need to be.

In the end, ICE storms the classroom and blindly shoots out the windows from outside as shattered glass falls on top of everyone:  

 

 

Amina: Were you able to talk to your daughter?

Ms. Perez: I was. She was scared, but I asked her to be brave. I just hoped to make her as proud of me as your father is of you. The others have been able to contact their families. So, we're ready for you to open the door.

Amina: Are you sure?

Ms. Perez: Yes, it's time

Amina: Dad. We're ready to come out.

Preach: Okay, baby girl, I'll let them know. Hey, they're ready to come out.

Agent Landry: All right boys, go time. Let's move.

Preach: What are you guys doing?

As they make entry, ICE brutally assaults the students like a gang of violent thugs, slamming one young girl into a wall:

 

 

Amina: No! They were coming out! Stop!

Agent Woodford: Watch it, Landry. She’s the troublemaker.

Khalil: She didn’t do anything! No! She didn’t do anything!

The episode concludes with Amina reading the rest of her article in a voiceover as ICE leads people out in handcuffs in slow motion while heartfelt music continues to play:

Many prestigious institutions are at the center of dismantling and erasing the history of the land. And like those countless institutions, our very own, the Dinsburg School, was built on the land of the Ohlone tribe, and yet this institution stays silent on its part in the erasure of that tribe, just like it has stayed silent about Julio's forced removal by ICE. There's no mention of the Ohlone tribe's history in our classes, texts, or plaques, while the founder of Dinsburg is forced upon us the moment you step on campus. This silence is equivalent to lying. It's the hypocrisy of the privilege to showcase their revisionist history. If institutions like Dinsburg remain silent in the face of these injustices, stories like Julio's will be all too common. Even though Julio has been a dedicated worker for Dinsburg for 30 years, Dinsburg has yet to denounce his kidnapping publicly. They have yet to show any support to his family, and they have remained silent, just like with the Ohlone tribe. Dinsburg wants the tragic events to be folded into forgotten history, so it is on the onus of the people who see and know the truth to take a stand. Silence is lying. Lying by omission is still lying, and the truth is essential to the human race and our humanity. It is how we grow, change, and how we don't repeat our failures of the past. Silence breeds acceptance. Violence allows for the erasure to happen again and again. Institutions, people like you reading this, and I need to stand and speak out. We need to be disruptive. We need to be loud.

"Kidnapping." Hyperbolic much? Brainwashing impressionable, young viewers to believe federal agents are racist predators who will eventually “come for” American citizens is dangerous and can lead to real-world consequences for both the protestors and ICE agents who, since January of this year, are facing an 8,000% increase in threats against them and their families.

Hollywood might want to remember that before telling kids to “be disruptive.”
