DEFAULTED: Evening Nets Ignore National Debt Topping $33 Trillion for Two Days

September 20th, 2023 5:16 PM

The ABC, CBS and NBC evening news shows once again proved why the American people should treat their coverage of President Joe Biden’s economy like the deceptive propaganda that it is.

The U.S. national debt reached a scary milestone when it surged over a whopping $33 trillion, The New York Times reported Sept. 18 based on newly available Treasury Department data. The development ironically comes amidst left-wing media outlets like The Times bashing House Republicans for daring to push for deep cuts in wasteful government spending. To put this into perspective, the new daunting figure means that “every household in the U.S.” is on the hook for $251,862 in debt each, according to Just Facts. In addition, the $33 trillion debt is "6.7 times annual federal revenues" and accounts for a ridiculous 126 percent of annual U.S. economic output. But it gets even worse. One estimate suggested that if one were to count a dollar every second, it would take 31,688 years just to reach $1 trillion. If one were to count to $33 trillion using the same methodology, it would take roughly 1,045,704 years to reach the amount of debt the U.S. managed to accumulate.

In retrospect, the new Treasury data showed that the national debt officially crossed the $33 trillion threshold on Friday Sept. 15. ABC World News Tonight, CBS Evening News and NBC Nightly News ignored the entire story in a gross display of journalistic irresponsibility during their Sept. 18 and Sept. 19 broadcasts. The networks didn’t even so much as hint at the reality that the U.S. would be hitting another historic debt record during their Sept. 15 broadcasts. Talk about the Big Three defaulting on their debt to report the news to the public.

“Prosecutors are trying to indict Trump for alleged fraud about his claims on Jan. 6. The real fraud is being committed by the Big Three networks who are refusing to educate the American public about the tragic national debt that is about to bankrupt America,” MRC Business Vice President Dan Schneider said in a statement. “If anybody should be prosecuted, it’s the network chiefs.”

The Big Three actually reporting the news on the debt would have exposed just how bad out-of-control government spending has gotten underneath Biden’s oversight. The New York Post reported Sept. 19 that “the federal government spent $6.27 trillion, which represents one-fourth of gross domestic product ($25.02 trillion),” in fiscal year 2022 alone.

The national debt record wasn’t the only major economic news the evening networks chose to ignore recently. All three networks also chose to bury the U.S. Census Bureau’s report showing that the U.S. poverty rate spiked 4.6 percentage points in 2022 to 12.4 percent for the first time since 2010. Heritage Foundation economist EJ Antoni told MRC Business that the inflation crisis spurred on by Biden’s outrageous policies served as the culprit behind the phenomenon. “Because inflation was so high last year, it moved the poverty threshold up at the fastest rate in decades,” Antoni said. “[B]ecause wages have lagged so far behind inflation during the Biden economy, people’s wages did not increase fast enough to keep many Americans from falling into poverty.”

It’s clear that the Big Three don’t mind beating their reputations as news organizations into the dirt as long as they satisfy their itch to protect their preferred president any chance they get.
