The ABC, CBS and NBC evening news shows ignored President Joe Biden admitting that he can’t promise to stop inflation, after telling Americans in September that “we’re going to get control of inflation.”
After months of blaming high domestic inflation on the war in Ukraine, Biden finally admitted the truth in a mealy-mouthed statement: “What I can’t do is I can’t guarantee that we’re going to be able to get rid of inflation, but I do think we can,” Biden announced at a Nov. 9 press conference at the White House.
That’s the exact opposite of what an apparently confident Biden promised to Americans on CBS’s 60 Minutes just two months ago: “I’m telling the American people that we’re going to get control of inflation.”
But the Big Three evening news shows – ABC's World News Tonight, CBS Evening News, and NBC Nightly News – refused to air Biden’s Nov. 9 inflation hedge during their Nov. 9 and Nov. 10 evening broadcasts. [Emphasis added].
It didn’t take long for Biden to return to his usual punching bags, pointing to the “pandemic,” the “war in Ukraine” and the notion that “we’re taking on powerful interests,” as the main causes of inflation in the U.S.
Biden also patted himself on the back for lowering gas prices, saying that “we’ve already brought down the price of gasoline about $1.20 a gallon across the board.” But if gas prices are still too high, that’s the fault of the “oil companies,” Biden said, that “are really doing the nation a real disservice.” Why? Because they made “profit” last quarter, the president explained.
CBS Evening News spent 132 seconds on “Turkey Inflation” without mentioning Biden’s somber admission.
"With just over two weeks until Thanksgiving, many Americans have already started shopping for their holiday get-togethers, and while higher prices at the grocery store are expected, it can still leave a foul taste in consumers’ mouths,” CBS anchor Norah O’Donnell said on Nov. 10, making a pun out of the words “foul” and “fowl.”
NBC Nightly News devoted a full segment to celebrating “abortion rights victories” in the midterm elections.
NBC News Washington Correspondent Yamiche Alcindor said on Nov. 10 that Americans around the U.S. “sent a clear message about reproductive rights” in the midterms, flashing a picture of a woman holding a sign with the words, “I’m a woman not a womb.”
Exit polls conducted by CNN found that nearly a third of voters said inflation was the issue that “mattered most” in deciding how they voted for House candidates, according to a Nov. 9 CNN article. More than “7 in 10” of those voters then chose to opt for Republicans.
Apparently, Biden conceding that he suddenly “can’t guarantee” that “we’re going to get rid of inflation” wasn’t newsworthy enough to the Big Three. Biden has a sordid history of gaslighting Americans into believing that sky-high prices were a temporary phenomenon.
