President Trump’s pardon of controversial Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio, scourge of illegal immigrants and a promoter of the “birther” conspiracy theory about Barack Obama, made the front of Sunday’s New York Times. Legal reporter Adam Liptak began the chorus of disapproval with “President Pardon of Arpaio Follows the Law, Yet Challenges It.” Yet the same paper treated another controversial presidential action -- the commutation of military secrets leaker Bradley Manning – in quite sympathetic tones.
The mainstream media’s ongoing crusade against President Donald Trump hit yet another new low on Wednesday afternoon, August 23, when Wolf Blitzer, host of the Cable News Network’s weekday Wolf program, let a Democratic guest slam the Republican occupant of the White House as “out of control” and compared Trump’s attacks on the press to tactics used by Nazi Germany. Blitzer teed up the attack by asking Rep. John Garamendi of California: “So we all saw one version of President Trump last night in Phoenix. We saw another version today. How do you reconcile that?”
Late night MSNBC anchor Brian Williams on Friday cheered the “moral courage” of John McCain and two other Republicans to derail ObamaCare repeal efforts. The journalist also hoped for GOP “heroes” in the mode of Republicans who stood up during Watergate. Narrating McCain’s vote against repeal, Williams touted, “In the well of the Senate, it came down to one very dramatic moment... Much was made of that moment, a moment of moral courage, a man staring down his own mortality yet again.”
Republican opposition to ObamaCare had little to do with spiraling costs, giveaways to insurance companies, or the rationing dangers and proven inefficiencies of government-run health care. According to the front of Saturday’s New York Times it all came down to anti-Obama rage. “An Angry Vow Fizzles for Lack of a Viable Plan -- After 7 Years, G.O.P. Can’t Turn Rage Into Results” was the A1 story from reporters Matt Flegenheimer, Jonathan Martin and Jennifer Steinhauer, all of whom are regular subjects at Newsbusters. It was a fitting conclusion to the NYT’s coverage of the so-far unsuccessful Republican drive to repeal the Affordable Care Act. For the last seven years Times reporters, not all of whom have a death grip on free-market principles, snidely insisted that Republicans were aligned against it not on principle, but for reasons of cruelty and anti-Obama racism (especially from the Tea Party).
So there is Senator John McCain. Newly returned from Arizona where he learned that he was now battling brain cancer - a battle in which all people of good will wish him well. There is nothing funny to be mocked or chided about with someone beginning a fight against serious disease. God bless. But the last thing one should do is not have the elementary respect for Senator McCain’s arguments and simply fall silent.
How quickly things change for liberal journalists. On Wednesday, after voting to allow debate to proceed on repealing ObamaCare, the Huffington Post sneered that John McCain will “die with dishonor.” Now, he’s “Jesus.” That hyperbole came from MSNBC contributor and editor of Business Insider Josh Barro.
After the all-night battle over the GOP’s attempt to repeal parts of ObamaCare, that ended in failure early Friday morning, MSNBC couldn’t stop gushing over the “maverick” Republican whose casting vote against the bill was the lynchpin that sealed the deal. Senator John McCain was one of the three Republicans who voted against their own party’s bill, and the liberal news network couldn’t stop praising him for defecting from the Republicans plan to repeal ObamaCare.
Wrapping up his coverage of Friday’s early morning Senate vote that at least temporarily scuttled GOP hopes for a repeal of ObamaCare, MSNBC anchor Brian Williams could not help but admire Senator John McCain’s decision to align himself with Democrats, calling him and two other GOP defectors a “profile in courage,” and he welcomed the vote against the Republican bill as “the people of this country... getting their voices heard.”
While describing how John McCain returned to the Senate with a “hero’s homecoming” following his cancer diagnosis, on Wednesday’s NBC Today, correspondent Hallie Jackson also seized on nasty online attacks against the Arizona Republican by left-wing activists upset that he voted to open up ObamaCare repeal legislation to debate in Congress.
Appearing as a guest on Tuesday's MSNBC Live, ObamaCare architect Jonathan Gruber -- infamous for advising President Barack Obama to deceive the public to get ObamaCare passed -- claimed that now, unlike in the past when politicians were just "bending the truth," now they are "explicitly lying" as Republicans prepare to move ahead on repealing ObamaCare.
The liberal media never help themselves, do they? Late Monday night, they showed just how shamelessly hypocritical they are when it comes to civility, trashing cancer-stricken Republican Senator John McCain (Ariz.) as someone who would send millions to their deaths by voting on the motion to proceed for repealing and replacing ObamaCare.
Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW), a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization working to eliminate governmental waste and fraud, just released its "2017 Congressional Pig Book," an annual publication highlighting wasteful government spending that should embarrass each and every member of Congress.
