I have experienced defeat in presidential politics many times. Actually, I expect most Americans have. You win some, and you lose some. I first experienced defeat in 1964 when then-Sen. Barry Goldwater went down, though I was not even old enough to vote. I experienced it in 1968. I experienced it again in 1976, when my candidate was Ronald Reagan.

One man recalled being told he should have been "aborted at birth," with another who described himself as a "female impersonator" who recounted being "blackballed" by his colleagues.

Friday, July 14 was the 228th anniversary of the storming of the Bastille prison in France in 1789. Bastille Day is a national holiday in France. NBC News noted the anniversary in a tweet. Longtime network correspondent Andrea Mitchell provided the comic relief in a tweeted Saturday evening reply, claiming that Friday marked "the 100th anniversary of US entering WWII."
