January 21st, 2015 4:38 PM
The State of the Union coverage on PBS last night had a slightly bizarre analysis as the speech ended. PBS NewsHour anchor Gwen Ifill jumped in over the applause and said Obama “talked about this being a breakthrough year for America and he seems to be taking on a victory lap.” Later, David Brooks said it was a "very liberal speech" and professed amazement that Obama pretended he hadn't been…

He may get a little stuff on trade and infrastructure."

On PBS and NPR, David Brooks Mocks 'Foxification' of the House GOP

January 19th, 2015 7:36 PM
New York Times columnist David Brooks shows up every Friday on NPR and PBS to sound very moderate in the microphones, which usually means taking an immoderate swipe at conservatives. On both All Things Considered and the NewsHour on Friday, he slammed House conservatives by associating them with Fox News and their fans. On PBS, Brooks compared to the House vote to block funding for Obama’s…

'Klansville USA' PBS Documentary Takes Cheap Shot at Republicans

January 14th, 2015 1:15 PM
"Klansville U.S.A." is a PBS American Experience production by WPBS in Boston based on a book of that title by David Cunningham. It is an interesting look at the rise and fall of the North Carolina Ku Klux Klan in the 1960s. A very good historical documentary marred by the jarring flaw of taking a cheap shot at Republicans.

WashPost Toasts Bill Moyers, 'Living Totem' of 'Alleged Leftward Bias'

January 2nd, 2015 12:55 PM
The Washington Post celebrated the latest retirement announcement of longtime PBS omnipresence Bill Moyers (we'll believe it when he's gone for a year). The headline is "A crusader's quiet farewell." That's polite code for "declining in relevance." Post media reporter Paul Farhi noted that PBS and Moyers are tightly wound in the brand: "Except for stints in commercial broadcasting (CBS News from…

Liberal PBS Pundit Mark Shields Slams Obama for Dumping Chuck Hagel

November 29th, 2014 4:11 PM
On Friday’s PBS NewsHour, the Shields and Brooks week-in-review segment began with mutual sensitivity about the Ferguson situation – the word or concept of riots never quite emerged. But what was really surprising was liberal Mark Shields unloading on the Obama White House over the dumping of Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, which anchor Judy Woodruff tried to soft-pedal as Hagel “steps down.”

Tavis Smiley Ignores Folk Singer’s Sex Offense History

November 21st, 2014 1:44 PM
What’s worse than spending a half-hour revisiting the 60s with some old beatniks and their guitars? Spending that half-hour tip-toeing around the fact that one of them is a convicted sex offender. On Nov. 18, PBS’ Tavis Smiley hosted Peter Yarrow and Noel “Paul” Stookey on his self-named show, the surviving members of the folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary. Smiley's entire interview ignored Yarrow's…
