As liberals began to pick up the pieces on Wednesday after Donald Trump was elected the next president of the United States, MSNBC host Chris Matthews provided a succinct embodiment of a liberal’s range of emotions over the course of a special two-hour Hardball from fear to downright strange behavior. 

Among many moments of smarmy media contempt for Donald Trump during a long election night, Chris Matthews' exchange with former New York City mayor and Trump surrogate Rudy Giuliani was an early contender for most self-righteous. It came prior to polls closing on the East Coast and not a single state having been decided, and long before the magnitude of Trump's seismic victory set in.

The liberal media were in mourning on Election Night when it became clear Donald Trump would be the next president of the United States. Panic was palpable and journalists, particularly on NBC networks, blamed a significant drop in Dow futures on Trump’s victory. CBS said the drop in futures felt like “Brexit,” while Rachel Maddow claimed Trump would wear the market drop as a “badge of honor.”…

Liberals can get strangely honest on camera after an electoral defeat. On MSNBC Live with Stephanie Ruhle on Wednesday morning, the guests were two liberals, former Newsweek and New Yorker editor Tina Brown and New York Times columnist Frank Bruni. The liberal sulking over Donald Trump’s win on election night continued on MSNBC, Wednesday. The former editor of Newsweek huffed, “This is so, so dispiriting. I think decency lost last night. And that's what's so hurtful about this. Not just that Hillary Clinton lost, but our image of who we are as a people, that we're tolerant, decent people suffered a real setback.” 

On Wednesday’s NBC Today, a distraught Andrea Mitchell was still struggling to come to terms with Hillary Clinton losing the presidential race and sorrowfully lamented: “...late yesterday, her team was still optimistic that they would prevail. Instead they're now planning a concession speech shortly this morning as history put on hold yet again.”

A stunned Chris Matthews struggled to comprehend Hillary Clinton’s loss and the victory of Donald Trump on election night. On MSNBC, Matthews sputtered, “[Clinton] won every debate by all standards. Every debate.... She had the best ad campaign, the best ground game.” 

Before polls closed on Election Day, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews had already vomited a bewildering story. Talking about how candidates spend the early part of elections nights, Matthews related, “Jack Kennedy did this. Ben Bradlee, his buddy, they went up to see a porn movie.” 

It isn’t just conservatives complaining about the news media this election cycle. Hoping to interview a millennial voter of Puerto Rican descent, MSNBC reporter Kerry Sanders found a Jill Stein supporter who didn’t think her candidate was being covered fairly. MSNBC, yet again, featured liberal celebrity James Taylor on Monday. This time, the singer admitted that he was “baffled” as to why anyone wouldn’t trust the “honest” Hillary Clinton. Talking to Katy Tur, he earnestly cheered, “I think that she is a positive, caring, sincere and honest person in spite of this.”

With credit to my colleague Brent Baker for spotting this classic case of Andrea Mitchell flashing her liberal bias, the MSNBC host and NBC News correspondent could barely contain her excitement for a Sunday night Hillary Clinton rally that she described as being both “extraordinary” and “magical.”
