Freaking Out About Texas: Republicans Are the New American ‘Taliban’

September 8th, 2021 12:40 PM

The left is freaking about Texas’s SB8 fetal heartbeat law going as far to attack Republicans as the American version of the Taliban. MSNBC host Joy Reid claimed the only way to fight of this new “Talibanism” was to “expand the court.”

ABC The View’s host Joy Behar called it “hatred of women.” Former ABC News analyst Matthew Dowd blared: “The idea these folks think that the word ‘pro-life’ belongs in their mouth, it ought to be ripped out of their mouth. Because these are folks that constantly talk about pro-life and want nothing to do with doing anything about guns.”

The Hollywood left went nuts too with Cher tweeting that “women were at the mercy of tyrants” and Bette Midler calling for a sex strike.

The following are some of the worst anti-Texas law takes from the last week:

Need to Pack the Court to Stop Republican Talibanism

“The things that the vast majority of people want: women to have liberty — personal bodily liberty most people want that, but between Republicans who don’t respect the rules and the laws and are willing to cheat and willing to do whatever it takes and now the courts being on their side and there now being a solid majority of them who want to enact hyper right-wing….a certain type of evangelical rule over us, which is Talibanism, right? ‘This is our sect and you will live by our sect whether you want to be a part of it or not.’ That scares me. Because if the court is willing to do that, where do we go from here if we don’t expand the court? I can’t think of what else we do, other than expand the court?”
— Host Joy Reid on MSNBC’s The ReidOut, September 3.

Co-host Sunny Hostin: “I see this incredible hypocrisy coming from the Christian right especially among people like myself who say that abortion is wrong and say it’s about the sanctity of life. Yet they’re so supportive of gun ownership. They’re so supportive of AR-15s. They’re so supportive of the death penalty. They’re so supportive of never ending wars.
Co-host Joy Behar: “They also don’t care after the kid is born. Then they drop you like a hot rock….Let’s say what this is about right? This is hatred of women….They’re worried about the Taliban and the Taliban and women. Worry about the Taliban in America. That’s what these guys really are.”
— Exchange on ABC’s The View, September 7.

How Dare Republicans Call Themselves “Pro-Life”

“The idea these folks think that the word ‘pro-life’ belongs in their mouth, it ought to be ripped out of their mouth. Because these are folks that constantly talk about pro-life and want nothing to do with doing anything about guns. Want nothing to do with doing anything about capital punishment, want nothing to do about funding health care of the people that may be born because of this....The GOP today is not the pro-life party. The GOP today is the pro-autocracy party.”
— Former ABC News political analyst Matthew Dowd on MSNBC’s Deadline: White House, September 2.

Coming Next Summer: The Handmaid’s Tale Becomes Reality

“By next summer, we could be living in our own version of The Handmaid’s Tale, where forced birth is the law in large sections of the country, including for children. Eleven states have triggered laws that are just lying in wait for Roe v. Wade to be overturned….People think it’s hyperbolic when I tweet about The Handmaid’s Tale coming to America. But I don’t think it seems hyperbolic now. Does it to you?”
— Host Joy Reid to Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren on MSNBC’s The ReidOut, September 2.

Another Excuse to Smear Kavanaugh & Thomas

“I knew that the Republican Party had no use for, really, respect for women, you know, when Clarence Thomas got in. But now, two of the nine members of the United States Supreme Court and two of the six conservative members, or one-third of the conservative members, have been accused of sexual misconduct and they have lifetime appointments on the court, so I think it’s pretty clear the way the right in America feels about women. So this doesn’t surprise me that they would go this far.”
— Host Joy Reid on MSNBC’s The ReidOut, September 2.

Hollywood’s Stable, Understated Reaction to Texas Law

“I suggest that all women refuse to have sex with men until they are guaranteed the right to choose by Congress.”
— September 2 tweet by singer/actress Bette Midler.

“The Taliban would love the Texas abortion law.”
— September 1 tweet by author Stephen King.
