On Thursday, Temple Israel released searing, never-before-seen images of the destruction inside their West Bloomfield, Michigan complex from the March 12 attack by a radical Islamist purportedly looking to harm Jews after an Israeli airstrike had taken out some of his family in Lebanon (as two were members of Hezbollah).
But this visual cost of anti-Semitism was nowhere to be seen on the flagship morning and evening newscasts of NBC and late Thursday on ABC.
CBS was a welcome contrast with a full story on Thursday’s CBS Evening News and a news brief on Friday’s CBS Mornings.
The former began with anchor Tony Dokoupil: “And in Michigan today, newly released images from that attack on a Jewish synagogue and preschool last week. They include a photo of the attacker holding an assault-style rifle and apparently dressed for battle.”
Correspondent Jonah Kaplan relayed the reality that, prior to this, the only visuals the public had of the damage inside the massive complex was “smoke pouring from one of America’s largest synagogues” and thus “hardly told the whole story.”
This report from @JonahPKaplan on Thursday's @CBSEveningNews with @TonyDokoupil was the only mention on the broadcast network newscasts of the haunting, newly released images from inside Temple Israel showing the destruction caused in last week's anti-Semitic attack by Ayman… pic.twitter.com/e8PYQyxGxl

As the images of the burned out hallways and a daycare left frozen in time flashed by, Kaplan reminded viewers this was caused by “fire...after a gunman armed with gasoline and explosives drove his truck into the building,” leaving “charred memories spanning generations, a traumatic moment frozen in time.”
Kaplan also delivered two terrifying updates, including just how much danger children were in:
CBS News has learned the truck stopped only steps away from a room with 24 small children inside. Everyone got out safely. We obtained this photo of the attacker, Ayman Ghazali, a naturalized citizen who lived in nearby Dearborn Heights. A U.S. official tell CBS News he sent it to his family in Lebanon shortly before the attack. Four of his relatives were killed in an Israeli drone strike earlier this month, including two brothers, who were part of a Hezbollah rocket unit.
Kaplan concluded by sharing not only was the injured security guard released from the hospital, but the synagogue has not “miss[ed] a beat” as, [e]ven without a building, they continue to offer services and other functions, but they’re doing it at a country club that’s actually run by Iraqi Christians.”
As for Friday’s CBS Mornings, Saturday co-host Adriana Diaz delivered the brief:
In Michigan, heartbreaking images show the devastation inside a synagogue and a preschool after last week's terrifying attack. Temple Israel released photos to “take back their narrative,” showing blackened halls, charred photos, and — look at this — snacks on the table — that’s coming up right there — as more than 100 children fled to safety. Authorities say the 41-year-old Ayman Ghazali — seen here holding an assault-style rifle — drove the truck filled with explosives into the building before taking his life. The synagogue has established an emergency fund to help rebuild their sacred space.
While ABC’s World News Tonight ignored it (in favor of stories such as a brief kickstarting annual shark fears in light of an attack in California), Good Morning America cobbled together 23 seconds from Will Reeve:
The Michigan temple attacked by an armed man in a car-ramming last week sharing these images here of the aftermath. The pictures show some of the damage to Temple Israel. At a press conference on Thursday, the sheriff confirming that officials believe the suspect acted alone and did not target any other locations. The rabbi saying all injured security guards will make a full recovery.
Instead of even giving this a news brief, NBC had other ideas, such as Thursday’s NBC Nightly News touted the findings of the latest study arguing wine is healthy in moderation and Friday’s Today stating the obvious that eating out is expensive in part because of alcohol.
