NewsBusters Podcast: Why Is 'News Judgment' Clouded by Racial Angst?

September 8th, 2025 10:23 PM

Horror bubbled up on social media over the brutal murder of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska, who was randomly stabbed to death while riding the light rail in Charlotte, North Carolina, by a homeless man with an extensive criminal and mental health record. A young woman fled war in Ukraine with her family, only to find death in an American city.

The liberal networks struggled to locate it. CBS Mornings arrived first. Once CNN touched it, it was framed as Republicans Pounce.

Senior research analyst Bill D'Agostino joins the show to discuss how and why this hypersensitive resistance to the Charlotte story happened. It's all about race, and a black man brutally killing a white woman seems like a narrative best suited for white racists, so they don't want to talk about it.

Plus: On the Sunday night shows of ABC's World News Tonight and NBC Nightly News, the liberal networks were grossly giddy in touting partisan protests against President Trump and joining them in opposing Trump’s desire to crack down on crime in Chicago, hoping the city remains quiet.

On ABC, anchor Linsey Davis intoned: "The Trump administration launches a new immigration process in Boston promising to go after the worst of the worst. In Chicago, thousands protest mass deportations." Reporter Selina Wang said Trump was “escalating his threats to surge federal law enforcement in American cities, immigration raids now underway in Boston....The President drawing outrage from leaders in Chicago." Those leaders were not identified as Democrats. (NBC pulled the same Trump vs. "local leaders" spin on Monday's Today.)

Over on Sunday's PBS News Weekend, anchor John Yang asked a local PBS anchor in Chicago "Why do you think he talks about Chicago so much?" The anchor admitted "black and brown communities" are "feeling the effects of crime much more regularly" than other parts of the city. In reality, Chicago has reported the most homicides of all American cities in every year since 2012.

We close by discussing Bill's study of Abby Phillip interruptions of her guests on CNN NewsNight. Shocker! She interrupts conservatives far more often.
