What State of the Union coverage anchored by Chris Matthews would be complete without the inevitable, nostalgic look back at Barack Obama? In the early hours of Wednesday, the MSNBC host talked to liberal actor Bradley Whitford and blurted, “I looked up to Obama. As a journalist,  I looked up to Obama. I don't mind saying so. Obviously.” 

During President Trump’s first State of the Union address on January 30, MSNBC host Joy Reid took to Twitter to rant about how polarizing the speech was – not because of any of the policies he mentioned, but because it talked about things like “family” and “church,” which she dismissed as outdated and nationalistic tropes.  

MSNBC’s hyperbolic, frenzied State of the Union coverage climaxed in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Despite the fact that 75 percent of Americans approved of the speech, director Rob Reiner lamented that “intelligent people” like Chris Matthews and Rachel Maddow were forced to listen to the “racist” “liar” Trump. 

Chris Matthews does not understand why Donald Trump said such nasty things about North Korea. If there’s someone you don’t want doing your fact checking, it’s probably Brian Williams. Yet, the disgraced ex-Nightly News anchor began MSNBC’s State of the Union coverage on Tuesday by triumphantly asserting, “We will fact check” Donald Trump’s State of the Union claims.

At first glance, it might seem that the mostly conservative Fox News Channel would be considered more politically divisive than such liberal cable networks as MSNBC and CNN. However, that’s not what the Morning Consult polling firm found when the organization surveyed 336,370 Americans over the previous three months to determine which brands divide Democrats and Republicans the most.

On Thursday afternoon, MSNBC host Katy Tur ended the 2:00 p.m. ET hour of MSNBC Live by fretting over the failure of gun control advocates to enact any new gun restrictions since the Sandy Hook killings of 2012. She ended up rhetorically suggesting that Americans are "okay with kids killing kids."

On Thursday's Deadline: White House on MSNBC, during a discussion of Republicans pushing theories of a "secret society" within the FBI that is trying to undermine President Donald Trump, Republican-leaning MSNBC contributor Elise Jordan likened the issue to the fake "Pizzagate" story that resulted in a deranged gunman storming into a pizza restaurant.
