Flashback: MSNBC's Matthews's Odd Fixation on Joni Ernst

Managing Editor's Note (Jan. 15, 2015; 5:15 p.m. Eastern): I've republished this to the front page today given the news that Sen. Ernst will be give the official Republican response to President Obama's State of the Union Address next Wednesday. If Chris Matthews doesn't make repeated sneering references to hog castration on MSNBC next Wednesday night, look out your window. You'll probably see a…

Hardball's Matthews Fails to Bring Up Damning Video in Ky. Senate Race

On his October 6 Hardball program, MSNBC's Chris Matthews hyped a new NBC poll that shows Democrat Alison Grimes up two points on incumbent Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell (Ky). This represents a six-point swing from a recent poll showing Grimes down by four, Matthews enthused. But let completely unmentioned during Monday's Hardball was a hidden video of Grimes campaign operatives admitting they…

NYT’s James Risen Accuses: ‘I Think Obama Hates the Press’

New York Times reporter James Risen unloaded an attack on President Obama as he accepted a journalism award at Colby College in Maine. “I think [President] Obama hates the press. I think he doesn’t like the press and he hates leaks,” he said. “I don’t think any of this would be happening under the Obama administration if Obama didn’t want to do it.” Risen took the occasion to compare his own…

Zucker Defends Overhaul of CNN: 'We Have to Change'

Ever since Jeff Zucker took the reins of the Cable News Network in January of 2013, he has made many significant changes in that channel's programming. His most popular move has been a shift from solid news to more reality shows, such as Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown and The Hunt With John Walsh. However, that change has also drawn fire from such people as Jon Stewart, host of The Daily Show…

Daily Beast Writer: Give [Some] Kids the Vote

Some days it seems like the Daily Beast prides itself on being a sounding board for utterly off-the-wall political ideas. Witness contributor Jillian Keenan's argument today that teens old enough to work and pay taxes -- but too young to vote -- should be granted the franchise.

CNN Hypes 'Groundbreaking' Transgender TV Series on Amazon

Samuel Burke touted Amazon's new streaming TV series Transparent on Monday's CNN Newsroom as "groundbreaking," and underlined that it's "tackling a topic that TV has rarely touched." The main character in the series, "Moira," is an elderly father who begins to dress as a woman. Burke acclaimed that "this role of a 70-year-old trans-gender character might just give Netflix a run for its money."

'This Week' Report on School Shootings Does Not Mention Gun Control

ABC News reporter Pierre Thomas unveiled a detailed investigative report on school shootings during yesterday's "This Week" program that surprisingly did not feature what such reports invariably include -- a plea for more restrictions on gun ownership. While this one dispatch might well be an outlier, it did come as a welcome relief from one of the most predictable patterns in news.

Biden Watch: Only CBS Covers the Veep's Latest Gaffe

Joe Biden committed a string of gaffes over the last several days, but they have gone largely unchallenged by disinterested networks. Over the weekend, the Vice President was forced to apologize to the United Arab Emirates and Turkey. This came in the wake of cringe-worty comment using an expletive. On Monday, only CBS This Morning's Charlie Rose reported, "Vice President Biden is apologizing to…

Chuck Todd: GOP Doesn't Like Regulation Unless It's Against Abortion

While interrogating Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus on NBC's Meet the Press on Sunday, host Chuck Todd spat out a nasty attack line against the GOP regarding a new Texas law requiring abortion clinics to have hospital-level medical standards: "One of the things about the Republican Party is you don't like a lot of regulation on businesses, except if the business is a…

Has 'Saturday Night Live' Followed Polls, Turned Against Obama?

With the autumn return of NBC's "Saturday Night Live" with all new installments, the traditionally reliable pro-Obama skits may be on the back burner as the voter opposition to the president is at an all time high, according to Gallup.   The actor portraying President Obama was the same as last season, Jay Pharoah, but this past Saturday night, the writers seemed to have been paying attention a…

NPR Spins: 'Vehement Hardliners' Vs. 'Progressives' at Vatican Meeting

NPR's Sylvia Poggioli promoted the cause of dissenters inside the Catholic Church on Sunday's Weekend Edition, as she covered the beginning of special meeting of bishops at the Vatican. She featured seven soundbites from four such dissenters (and didn't identify three of them as such), and none from orthodox Catholics. The correspondent also played up the "vehement response" from five cardinals…

John Oliver: Honoring 'Murderous Ego-Maniac' Columbus 'Still a Thing?'

Since liberals rule late-night comedy, it’s no surprise that a left-wing version of American history would make it’s way into the comedy routines. After all, liberals are already defending the politically correct changes to AP U.S. history books as needed because conservatives “hate” the true history of America which excluded everyone but white men. Well late night comedy host John Oliver…
