In roughly 24 hours, ABC News had spent over 24 minutes (24 minutes 19 seconds) between their flagship morning and evening broadcasts gushing over Empire star Jussie Smollett and the alleged hate crime he claimed to be a victim of. But recent reporting from ABC7, their local affiliate in Chicago, suggested that Smollett may have collaborated with others to stage the attack because he allegedly was being written off the show.
Empire star Jesse Smollett was brutally attacked early Tuesday morning in Chicago in what police have suggested could be deemed a hate crime due to Smollett being gay with the assailants allegedly hurling homophobic and racist slurs. However, two claims that has not yet been substantiated were that the alleged perpetrators either wore Make America Great Again (MAGA) hats or shouted “this is MAGA country” to Smollett as he was beaten, doused in bleach, and had a noose tied around his neck. Despite that, the 1:00 p.m. Eastern edition of MSNBC Live mentioned it anyway.
As the Media Research Center has previously documented, the liberal broadcast networks often give prominent Democrats cover when they’re accused of serious crimes by refusing to cover the story. But there seemed to be some accusations that manage to break through. During Tuesday’s evening broadcast, NBC Nightly News was the only network program to report that a second body was found in the apartment of “prominent Democratic activist and donor”, Ed Buck.
After ABC spent two days touting celebrities boycotting the Super Bowl, NBC Nightly News used their Monday evening broadcast to do the same. “It's long been one of the highly coveted gigs in the music industry, but tonight some of the world’s most popular artists appear to be saying no thanks to the Super Bowl Halftime Show,” announced anchor Lester Holt.
On Monday, the focus of midterm election coverage on all three network morning shows was cheering on pop star Taylor Swift “as she uses her voice to venture into the political fray” by endorsing Democrats in her home state of Tennessee. Anchors and reporters gushed over the singer finally using her influence to push a liberal agenda after having “avoided politics in the past.”
On Wednesday, New Mexico prosecutors appeared to have dropped the ball as a group of suspected Muslim extremists were released on a technicality. Despite a dead three-year-old child being found in their compound, 11 starved children, and claims they were being trained to carry out school shootings, five suspects were let go all because prosecutors missed a crucial deadline. It was shocking and terrifying news, but it apparently didn’t deserve any airtime on the CBS Evening News.
Between Thursday evening and Friday morning, most of the networks ran at least one report on a mother in Dallas who shot a carjacker as he tried to steal her car while her two young children were still inside. But the far-left MSNBC has been true to form in not making any room during its 24 hour a day airtime to give any attention to this story of a woman using a gun to defend her children which even CNN made room for a few times. CBS also has not given any attention to the story so far.
With the caravan of migrants now sitting at an entry point on the U.S.-Mexico border outside California, the liberal major network news outlets (ABC, CBS, and NBC) were sure to make it a big part of their Monday evening broadcasts. And while ABC and CBS both bemoaned how the people were stuck as they waited to attempt to get into the country, the report on NBC Nightly News cast America in a negative light as they portrayed us as a moral conundrum.
On Monday, all three network shows recited the same liberal script as they bemoaned a caravan of over 100 migrants from Central America being blocked from entering the United States illegally. The Border Patrol simply doing its job was portrayed as a cruel act that created a “desperate situation” and “crisis at the border.”
On Wednesday evening, the CBS Evening News and the NBC Nightly News both seized on a few instances of school teachers -- a tiny number out of more than three million teachers nationally -- who accidentally fired guns in schools as the networks tried to undermine the push for training some teachers to carry guns. CNN's Early Start earlier in the day also hyped one of the California story as anchors Dave Briggs and Christine Romans also marveled over a gun control group placing 7,000 shoes on the Capitol Lawn to commemorate gun-related child deaths.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions was in California on Wednesday as part of his effort to end their so-called “sanctuary city” and “sanctuary state” policies that forbid local law enforcement from working with federal agents on immigration matters. During NBC Nightly News hours later, the network showed who’s side they took in the debate when they framed the story using Democratic Governor Jerry Brown’s hyperbolic declaration that it was a “war on California.”
Monday’s network morning shows all promoted former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick suing the NFL and claiming that all 32 League teams were in “collusion” against hiring him, despite a complete lack of evidence for his claims.
