DAY 5 of Obama TV on CBS: Vacation Pal Gayle King Cheers Michelle

November 17th, 2020 12:50 PM

Tuesday was day five of Obama TV. Also known as CBS This Morning. Co-host Gayle King, an Obama donor who has vacationed with the family, yet again highlighted the latest on the Democrats. King cheered the “powerful message” of Mrs. Obama going after Donald Trump again.

Reporter Nikole Killion hyped, “Former First Lady Michelle Obama posted about the transition on Instagram.” Co-host Anthony Mason marveled, “Some very strong words there from the former First Lady.”

But it was Obama super fan King who was the most moved:

But not only that, Anthony. She said, “To be honest, none of this was easy.” Donald Trump had spread racist lies against her husband that put her family in danger. This is what gets me. "That was something that I felt strongly about but for the sake of the country," because she said, “I welcomed Melania Trump when they came to the White House that day for the transition. For the sake of the country she had to set her anger aside and find strength and maturity to move on. I think that sends such a powerful message.

Co-host Tony Dokoupil fretted, “They were there on inauguration day for Donald Trump. It's hard to imagine the same thing happening at current juncture. We’ll see.”

By Monday, CBS had devoted 48 minutes to the new Barack Obama book, including 24 minutes on This Morning on Sunday and Monday. King praised her own interview with former President Obama: “People have been reaching out, saying they forgot, not forgot, but it was reminder about the humanity and intelligence of Barack Obama and also Michelle Obama."

On Sunday’s This Morning, King encouraged the Democrat to bash America: “72 million people voted for Donald Trump. What does that say to you about the state of this country?”

On Saturday, This Morning reporter Dana Jacobson reported talking points from the ex-President: “Former President Barack Obama says President Trump's unfounded claims of election fraud are putting American democracy at risk.”

On Friday, King was excited just for the opportunity to interview President Obama.  “We all felt very proud to be there. Thanks, President Obama.”

NIKOLE KILLION: Former First Lady Michelle Obama posted about the transition on Instagram, stating, in part, “To play along with these groundless conspiracy theories, whether for personal or political gain is to put our country's health and security in danger. This isn't a game.” Meanwhile, the Biden transition is moving ahead with staffing. CBS News has learned Louisiana Congressman Cedric Richmond and Biden campaign manager Jen O'Malley Dillon have been offered positions in the new administration. Both were trusted campaign advisers. And so, this starts to give you a sense of who the President-elect wants around him in the White House. Anthony?

ANTHONY MASON: Nicole, thank you. Some very strong words there from the former First Lady. This is a critical moment with the virus accelerating, with the Coronavirus accelerating, we need to get a handle on it.

GAYLE KING: But not only that, Anthony. She said, “To be honest, none of this was easy.” Donald Trump had spread racist lies against her husband that put her family in danger. This is what gets me. That was something that I felt strongly about but for the sake of the country, because she said, “I welcomed Melania Trump when they came to the White House that day for the transition. For the sake of the country she had to set her anger aside and find strength and maturity to move on. I think that sends such a powerful message.

TONY DOKOUPIL: They were there on inauguration day for Donald Trump. It's hard to imagine the same thing happening at current juncture. We’ll see.

KING: And she feels strongly her family was put in danger. So when she says it's not a game, she knows what she's talking about.
