Robert De Niro: 'Do You Really Think Our Country Is Ready for a White First Lady?'

Can you imagine the outrage if in 2008 someone asked the crowd at a McCain-Palin campaign event, "Do you really think our country is ready for a black first lady?"

According to Politico, on Monday, with Michelle Obama present at a New York fundraiser for her husband, actor Robert De Niro asked attendees, "Do you really think our country is ready for a white first lady?"

"Callista Gingrich. Karen Santorum. Ann Romney. Now do you really think our country is ready for a white first lady?" De Niro asked a star-studded crowd gathered in the backroom of Locanda Verde, a restaurant he owns on Greenwich Street in TriBeCa.

Someone in the crowd shouted, "No!" as De Niro quickly added, "Too soon, right?"

"Too soon, right?"

Politico's Jennifer Epstein noted that the attendees included Beyonce, her mother Tina Knowles, Star Jones, Whoopi Goldberg, Gayle King, Angela Bassett and Ben Stiller.

They probably also think it's "too soon" for another white first lady.

Of course, the reference here is that they all want Michelle Obama to have four more years in this role therefore mitigating the inherent racism on display.

But just imagine what would have happened in 2008 if this occurred at a McCain-Palin event. Or if someone at a Gingrich-Romney-Santorum fundraiser asked, "Isn't it time for a white first lady again?"

That would have been the end of that candidate's campaign.

But because the joke is directed at white women, it's just fine.

Which leads to a broader question: If the Left and their media minions really want to end racism in America, why are they always making racist jokes about white people?

Will we ever live in a color-blind society as long as any ethnic group - even whites - is allowed to be the target of derision even when intended to be humorous?

Don't these folks realize that such comments further divide our nation along racial lines, and that they are therefore a part of the problem rather than the solution?

Obviously not.

Consider too that since 2008, we've been regularly told that anyone who didn't vote for Obama was racist.

Aren't folks who express - in public, no less - that it's "too soon" for another white first lady therefore also racist?

The open-minded, far more intelligent folks on the Left can't seem to make this logical connection.

I wonder why.
