Sometimes the liberal media are so boldfaced in their lies that you can do little more than laugh right back in their face. That was the case during Tuesday’s Inside Politics when CNN host Dana Bash falsely and laughably suggested that there were no Democrats who supported abortion up until the moment of birth. But she has talked about such Democrats on-air, on CNN.
Bash’s assertion came during an interview with Bob Vander Plaats of The Family Leader, an Iowa-based conservative organization. He was originally there to speak about his organization’s recent anti-Trump ad campaign when Bash pivoted to suggesting his pro-life stance was extreme and out of touch with a majority of Americans.
“CNN has some fresh polling today about it … And you personally are advocating for a national abortion ban and encouraging Republican candidates to embrace that message … [the poll] shows that among voter who approve of the decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade, people like you, 66 percent of Republicans say they think this should be a state issue. 71 percent of independents say the same,” she lectured Vander Plaats.
He countered Bash by politely arguing that other “polling on that is about 70 percent” in favor of some form of limit on abortion.
In 2019, a Knights of Columbus/Marist poll found that 85 percent of respondents wants limits on abortion in some shape and form. The most popular with 28 percent was to limit it to rape, incest, and to save the life of the mother. And 27 percent supported a ban as early as three months.
Twice, Vander Plaats called out the extreme liberal position that called for allowing abortion-on-demand up until the moment of birth:
But we do believe what's out of step and what’s extreme is what Governor Newsom and Joe Biden and others basically project, and that is abortion on demand til the time of birth. That's why we think there needs to be a limit at the federal level.
And right now what we're saying the pain-capable bill makes a lot of sense. The 15-week limit. But there needs to be some type of limit to reign in the extreme positions of the left like Newsom and like Biden.
It was as she was wrapping up the conversation that Bash pushed her BIG LIE. “I just want to say that I have not talked to a Democrat who wants abortion-on-demand til time of birth,” she falsely asserted.

“Your fellow Democrat running for Senate in Pennsylvania, John Fetterman, has said that he does not believe that there should be government limits on abortion at all," she said to Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) back in September on State of the Union. Murray refused to say if she believed that abortion should be limited in any way. If they didn’t want a limit, that meant they were fine with abortions happening up until the moment of birth.
So, not only did Bash acknowledge that Fetterman believed in limitless abortions, she directly spoke to someone who shared that view. That’s not to mention the extreme position of former Virginia Democratic Governor Ralph Northam, who discussed aborting “delivered” babies.

DANA BASH: I want to talk about something that is not inside baseball, and that is the question and the issue of abortion.
CNN has some fresh polling today about it. And just the sort of preface here I should tell people is your organization, of course, is staunchly pro-life. And you personally are advocating for a national abortion ban and encouraging Republican candidates to embrace that message.
But I want you to look or at least listen to the findings from this poll. And it shows that among voter who approve of the decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade, people like you, 66 percent of Republicans say they think this should be a state issue. 71 percent of independents say the same. 71 percent of independents say it should be a state issue not a national issue.
So, the question is, are you concerned that you're pushing candidates to take a position that might work in the short-term but might be politically unpopular in a general election?
BOB VANDER PLAATS (The Family Leader, president & CEO): Not at all. We don't believe abortion or the sanctity of human life is a state rights issue. We believe it's a human rights issue. And so, states like Iowa have passed a heartbeat bill. South Carolina has done the same. Florida has done the same.
But we do believe what's out of step and what’s extreme is what Governor Newsom and Joe Biden and others basically project, and that is abortion on demand til the time of birth. That's why we think there needs to be a limit at the federal level.
