Democrat Clay Aiken Tweeted About Punching Ann Coulter, Urged Folks to Call Her a C**t

As we at NewsBusters have documented, the liberal media have shown no lack of interest in the candidacy of American Idol runner-up turned Democratic politician Clay Aiken.

So it should be interesting to see the coverage, or lack thereof, for Mr. Aiken having tweeted a while back, "Anyone else watching @piersmorgan want to punch Ann Coulter in the face?" What's more, reports blogger Sooper Mexican, Aiken once all but urged fans to call Coulter a c**t. War on women, anyone?

First, Jessica Chasmar of the Washington Times with the Twitter story (emphases mine):

Democratic congressional candidate Clay Aiken has reportedly deleted a tweet in which he fantasized about punching conservative author Ann Coulter “in the face.”

“Anyone else watching @piersmorgan want to punch Ann Coulter in the face?” the former “American Idol” runner-up tweeted in October 2012, The Daily Caller reported.

The tweet was first flagged by a blog that found other instances of celebrities re-tweeting Mr. Aiken’s comment, including Arsenio Hall.

“You and Ann should do a political version of ESPN’s First Take!” he replied.

Mr. Aiken won the North Carolina Democratic nomination last week with a lead of less than 400 votes, just one day after his main contender, Keith Crisco, was found dead in his home.

Now the Democrat is set to run in November against Republican Rep. Renee Ellmers, who has represented the conservative district for two terms so far.

BuzzFeed reported earlier this year that Mr. Aiken had deleted a number of tweets ahead of his congressional run, but the report didn’t mention the one about Miss Coulter, The Daily Caller said.

One of the deleted tweets said: “Playing drinking game with my brother now. We drink every time we see a black person on screen at the RNC convention. #soberasamormon.”

And here's the offensive tweet that Sooper Mexican found involving the C-word:

Since Ann Coulter says it's ok 2 b offensive when describing people, let's "C" what words we can use 2 describe her huff.to/P8moE7

Now, in fairness, I think pretty much everyone on Twitter has tweeted something rashly every once in a while which they wish they could take back, and well, sorta do by deleting the comment. That said, what's publicly shared on social media is more than fair game for anyone running for office of any party or ideological persuasion.

What's more, you can bet that a conservative celebrity seeking federal office who tweeted these things would be grilled about the comment by the media, and rightly so, particularly if the candidate were running against a woman, as Mr. Aiken is, seeking to unseat incumbent Rep. Renee Elmers (R).
