How Original: Behar Makes Fat Joke About Christie

May 1st, 2012 11:29 AM

On the April 30 edition of ABC’s The View, co-host Barbara Walters started a discussion about the preceding Saturday's White House Correspondent’s Association (WHCA) dinner. However, as usual, liberal comedian Joy Behar had to throw in a few cheap shots at a Republican.

During their discussion, most of the panel discussed the night's memorable jokes, including one made by comedian Jimmy Kimmel at Walters's expense. In all, the segment was supposed to be a light-hearted discussion about the WHCA dinner, which has a tradition of ribbing politicians of both sides of the aisle as well as journalists. [Audio here. Of course, Joy Behar, who can't turn her partisanship off for a minute, saw the opportunity to make a lame fat joke about New Jersey governor Christ Christie. "Of course, Chris Christie was there, there was a buffet!” she chortled. How original, Joy.

Behar defended herself by saying Jimmy Kimmel made similar jokes, but conservative panelist Elisabeth Hasselbeck gave Behar a minor lecture, asking whether or not the View’s panel would crack fat jokes about female politicians.

By the way, this isn’t the first time the View has pondered whether Gov. Christie is too pudgy to be POTUS.

BARBARA WALTERS: I sat next to Bill Lawrence, who is the creator and executive producer of Cougar Town and Scrubs. And his wife, you all know, Christa Miller, who stars in Cougar Town,  has been on with us many times and [inaudible], Thomas Donilon, I hope I pronounced it right, Donilon, who is the national security adviser for Obama and he was saying that last year, Whoopi, he was sitting there laughing, but as was the President, but he knew that the very next day, they were going to go after Osama Bin Laden.

JOY BEHAR: Well, oh course Chris Christie was there, there was a buffet.

[ laughter ]

SHERRI SHEPHERD: You couldn’t help yourself there, could you?

WALTERS: Jimmy Kimmel was on after there.

BEHAR: Can I say they took a fuel shots at Chris Christie. Fat jokes? You know, Jimmy Kimmel did. He took it in great spirits. So I’m assuming this joke would have amused him also.

ELISABETH HASSELBECK: Why is it okay to go after a fat guy, not a fat woman at this table?

BEHAR: Its obvious, isn’t it?

HASSELBECK: I’m just asking.
