Cross Suggests Clarence Thomas Suffers From a Racial Identity Crisis

April 2nd, 2022 1:15 PM

On Saturday's The Cross Connection, MSNBC’s Tiffany Cross used the manufactured controversy over Justice Clarence Thomas’s refusal to recuse himself on January 6-related cases because of his wife Ginni’s work to declare that Thomas is his white wife’s puppet and to suggest that he suffers from some sort of racial identity crisis.

As if to prove her point, Cross portrayed basic biographical material as deeply profound, “Something I discovered, a lot of younger viewers may not know, Clarence Thomas was actually married to a black woman, he has a son named Jamal.”

She then portrayed Thomas as racially confused, “and now with his new wife, with Ginni Thomas, his, he’s always been problematic in his thoughts, he seems to have fallen deeper into the sunken place with this woman running a puppet regime it appears, being, aiding Donald Trump and breaking the law.”

She then inquired of author and The Nation just correspondent Elie Mystal, “How is it possible that Judge Thomas can continue to serve on the Supreme Court?”

After referencing Ginni Thomas, Mystal declared that “the-- American problem here is Clarence Thomas” because he refuses to recuse himself over his wife’s political activities.

Mystal also felt insulted that anybody would think differently, “And again you have to listen to stupidity of arguments out the right. They're saying ‘Well, actually, Thomas and Ginni say that they never talk about their work.’ Okay, A, I don't believe them. B, the issue is that your wife's caught up in the insurrection mess that you have to be a judge over, right? It’s your wife's texts… that you're, that the only justice potentially that is voting to keep secret, like, that's the problem, right?”

If Mystal doesn’t believe Thomas, that’s his problem, but there is compelling evidence to believe that Thomas ruled that way because that’s what he honestly believes.

TIFFANY CROSS: And speaking of, in need of—of-- a public defender, perhaps Ginni Thomas might want to look into one because I am baffled at how this woman has been able to maneuver this way. Something I discovered, a lot of younger viewers may not know, Clarence Thomas was actually married to a black woman, he has a son named Jamal, and now with his new wife, with Ginni Thomas, his, he’s always been problematic in his thoughts, he seems to have fallen deeper into the sunken place with this woman running a puppet regime it appears, being, aiding Donald Trump and breaking the law. How is it possible that Judge Thomas can continue to serve on the Supreme Court?

ELIE MYSTAL: Yeah, Ginni Thomas is so crooked, she thinks, like, the Leaning Tower of Pisa is straight, right? Like, she—she’s—she’s been a problem for 30 years. But the—the—the-- American problem here is Clarence Thomas. Nobody is going to stop Ginni Thomas from having a job and thinking crazy thoughts and trying to overthrow the government. That's her problem. Clarence Thomas is supposed to be above the fray here. And again you have to listen to stupidity of arguments out the right. They're saying “Well, actually, Thomas and Ginni say that they never talk about their work.” Okay, A, I don't believe them. B, the issue is that your wife's caught up in the insurrection mess that you have to be a judge over, right? It’s your wife's texts--

CROSS: Yeah

MYSTAL: -- that you're, that the only justice potentially that is voting to keep secret, like, that's the problem, right? That’s the problem with appearances. So, of course he should recuse himself, but as I said multiple times on this air, the Supreme Court is the only court in America that operates with no ethical guidelines. There are no ethics—

CROSS: Well

MYSTAL: -- rules, there are no ethics statutes for the Supreme Court and until Congress changes that, there's no way to force Thomas to recuse himself.
