Baffled MSNBC: Wait, How Can Women Actually Support Trump?

November 11th, 2020 9:30 AM

MSNBC Live host Craig Melvin was baffled on Tuesday how President Trump could have done better with white female voters in 2020 than 2016, after all he is a bad man with bad policies. The Daily Show co-creator and founder and CEO of Abortion Access Front Lizz Winstead agreed as was greatly alarmed that woman might not agree with her on abortion.

Melvin confusion as to why women didn't vote for Biden in historic numbers originated from "an article in the Washington Post that caught my eye and here’s the headline: 'The gender gap was expected to be historic. Instead, women voted much as they always have.'"

He wondered, in an increasingly high tone, how any woman could vote for such a man as Trump, "So Lizz, with everything that we've seen in the last four years, massive pandemic, child separations at the border, an impeachment, attempts to roll back the Affordable Care Act, nothing seems to have changed in a lot of voters' minds. Why?"

Winstead would reply that single-issue pro-lifers might have something to do with it, "Well, you know, working as we do on the front lines, especially around reproductive health, one thing we have found at Abortion Access Front are the intersections around single focused issues especially when it comes to reproductive rights."

The reason, according to Winstead, why women would support candidates who put children in cages is because the architect of such a policy, "came out of the anti-abortion movement with no background in re-putting kids back with their families or immigration."

Of course, this isn't true as we have photographic evidence from the Obama era of children in cages.

Still, Winstead lamented that pro-lifers, or as she describes them "anti-abortion activists", would populate a Republican administration's Department of HHS, "When you look at the Department of Health and Human Services there are record number of people who are anti-abortion activists who are running those departments and in second level jobs there that do not come with health experience but come with anti-abortion activism experience."

The fact that women may be pro-life is very terrifying for Winstead, "So we have found that they lead with abortion almost every single time and they're putting anti-abortion leaders in place in all these spaces and that feels very alarming to us."

Yes, it must be very alarming to realize that half the country is not a monolithic group.

MSNBC With Craig Melvin

CRAIG MELVIN: Lizz, there is an article in the Washington Post that caught my eye and here’s the headline: "The gender gap was expected to be historic. Instead, women voted much as they always have." So Lizz, with everything that we've seen in the last four years, massive pandemic, child separations at the border, an impeachment, attempts to roll back the Affordable Care Act, nothing seems to have changed in a lot of voters' minds. Why?

LIZZ WINSTEAD: Well, you know, working as we do on the front lines, especially around reproductive health, one thing we have found at Abortion Access Front are the intersections around single focused issues especially when it comes to reproductive rights. With everything you just named, whether kids that have been detained and are in cages, the person who came up with that policy was an activist who came out of the anti-abortion movement with no background in re-putting kids back with their families or immigration. When you look at the Department of Health and Human Services there are record number of people who are anti-abortion activists who are running those departments and in second level jobs there that do not come with health experience but come with anti-abortion activism experience. When you look at Black Lives Matter movement, when we talk about systemic racism, what the other side will argue is Planned Parenthood kills more black babies than anyone else. So we have found that they lead with abortion almost every single time and they're putting anti-abortion leaders in place in all these spaces and that feels very alarming to us.
