Jimmy Fallon Jokes About Obama’s Economic Record, Blaming Bad News on the GOP

March 20th, 2015 1:02 AM

During his Thursday monologue, Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon turned to the Obama administration for the source of his current events jokes as President Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and even the scandal-ridden Secret Service each saw a few jests sent their respective ways.

First discussing the President’s recent trip to Cleveland, Fallon started by making a small quip about President’s word choice in criticizing budget proposals from congressional Republicans: “[He] said it’s just ‘a path to prosperity for those who are already prospering.’ [LAUGHTER] Then he stopped to wipe the spit off everyone in the front row. [LAUGHTER] He’s like, probably, cause I probably pressed the patience of the people partaking.”

It was after that, however, that Fallon took a dig at the President’s economic record after he told the crowd that the economy was so strong that “I’m going to take a little credit”

Then the people at the rally were like, “dude, we're all here in the middle of the day because we don't have jobs, so stop talking about how good the economy is.” [LAUGHTER AND APPALAUSE] “I want to go to work!” [APPALAUSE] That’s right.

The NBC personality didn’t let up as he made another witty remark when it comes to Obama blaming Republicans whenever things go wrong: “Obama discussed the successful economy and said, quote, ‘I'm going to take a little credit.’ Then the economy got bad again and he was like, ‘Republicans did it.’ [LAUGHTER AND APPALAUSE] Interesting.”

Turning his attention to Biden and the Secret Service, Fallon brought some humor to the newest scandal facing the agency:

And this week, President Obama was photographed wearing a large, black electronic watch that many people believe is his fitness tracker. Then Obama’s secret service agent said, “hey, that's kind of like the thing I have to wear on my ankle.” [LAUGHTER AND APPALAUSE] “Represent. Technically, if I'm on this side of the fence, I can have tequila shots.”

When it was Biden’s turn, the Tonight Show host relied on the Vice President’s aloof personality to joke that: “Not to be outdone, Joe Biden was photographed wearing a necklace with his name, address, and allergies in case he gets lost.”

Fallon returned to Obama for the final political-related joke by showing video of Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny visiting the White House on Tuesday and extending his hand to Obama for handshake.

Unfortunately for Kenny, the President looked the other direction and appeared to decline Kenny’s advance. After the video, Fallon ruled that one can refer to that as “the shamerock no-shake.”

Fallon’s jests at the expense of Obama and Biden on Thursday are the latest in what has been a month in which Fallon has taken repeated shots at Democrats. On Tuesday, he lampooned Hillary Clinton’s excuses for only having one phone and account while Secretary of State in light of her e-mail scandal.

Back on March 6, Fallon predicted that, based on the reaction Hillary Clinton received at an EMILY’s List dinner, Joe Biden would have to “have to pull a Mrs. Doubtfire” to win the presidency.

Just two days before, he mocked Democrats who made the decision to boycott Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech by showing a series of videos where Democrats repeatedly tripped over their words in giving their reasons for not attending.

JIMMY FALLON:  Here's what everyone’s talking about tonight. During a speech in Cleveland yesterday, President Obama criticized the GOP’s budget proposal and said it’s just “a path to prosperity for those who are already prospering.” [LAUGHTER] Then he stopped to wipe the spit off everyone in the front row. [LAUGHTER] He’s like, probably, cause I probably pressed the patience of the people partaking – [LAUGHTER AND APPALAUSE]

During that same speech, President Obama discussed the country's successful economy and said, “I'm going to take a little credit.” [LAUGHTER] Then the people at the rally were like, “dude, we're all here in the middle of the day because we don't have jobs, so stop talking about how good the economy is.” [LAUGHTER AND APPALAUSE] “I want to go to work!” [APPALAUSE] That's right. Obama discussed the successful economy and said, quote, “I'm going to take a little credit.” Then the economy got bad again and he was like, “Republicans did it.” [LAUGHTER AND APPALAUSE] Interesting.

Technically, if I'm on this side of the fence, I can have tequila shots.” [LAUGHTER AND APPALAUSE] That's right. President Obama was photographed wearing a fitness tracker that features a GPS, heart monitor, and step counter. Not to be outdone, Joe Biden was photographed wearing a a necklace with his name, address, and allergies in case he gets lost. [LAUGHTER AND APPALAUSE] He gets lost sometimes, guys and I – Oh, this thing made me laugh, here. Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny visited the White House this week to celebrate St. Patrick's Day and he seemed pretty excited to meet with President Obama and he went to shake Obama's hand, and, well, just check out what happened.

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA [AS KENNY EXENDS HAND]: Well, it is a great pleasure – [LAUGHTER AND APPALAUSE]

FALLON: Huh, I should get a manicure. That's what they call the old shamrock no-shake. [LAUGHTER] Can I have a shamrock no-shake, please?
