Bazaar: Border Crisis Proves Handmaid’s Tale is Coming True

We’re living in a dystopian future where women are forced to have babies and the government takes away children, yadaydayada. As everyone knows, The Handmaid’s Tale is a hit Hulu show that liberals love to use as an example of what Trump’s America will look like at some unspecified time in the future. But in a new twist on the tired scare tactic, Bazaar writer Alexis Brent says we’re already living The Handmaid’s Tale, and the proof is at the America/Mexico border.

Brent claims in a recent article that “the same dystopian devastation” present throughout the series “is unfolding in the U.S right now.” She notes that in the series, “adulterers” and other “sinners” are punished by having their “infants taken from them and given to Gilead’s elite.” Just like the illegal immigrants having “their children inhumanely stripped from them,” so that “these children now exist in a world that is foreign.” Of course they are. They’re foreigners. They were brought illegally to a foreign country by law-breaking parents.

The reason this is happening? Fascism. She claims that “it starts with one policy and leads to another, as fascism slowly seeps into the fabric of our nation,” and “before you know it, we are subjected to an existence that is defined not by freedom, but by the desire for it.”

Our country is “currently led by men and women who subscribe to ideology based on nationalism and xenophobia” and is turning it into one “that looks less like freedom and more like fascism.” This fascism “lies in the government’s obsession with controlling individuals and families” in order to “make the country as pious as possible.

None of this is new. The border kids are just an excuse to run out the old panic lines. Margaret Atwood, who wrote the original novel back in the 1980s (yes, the left was imagining fascist bogeymen back then) told Vanity Fair in the context of Trump’s recent election, “Fears and anxieties proliferate. Basic civil liberties are seen as endangered, along with many of the rights for women won over the past decades.”

The right is suppressing freedom and trying to control individuals and families? Is it because we don’t want completely open borders, want pro-life clinics to have the ability to stay pro-life, or don’t want people forced to go against their religion to bake a cake?
