Trump Derangement Syndrome sufferers found out in shock and horror that the major investor in their favorite health and fitness companies is a Trump supporter. Oh heavens, WHY? Leftwing celebrities Billy Eichner and Chrissy Teigen began a boycott of companies Equinox and SoulCycle after hearing the news that billionaire investor Stephen Ross is throwing a “mega-fundraiser” for President Donald J. Trump.
Lion King voice actor Billy Eichner led the outrage brigade, calling for a full scale boycott against the companies with the charge that Ross was complicit with “mass murder.” The voice of meerkat Timon tweeded at Equinox, “what’s your policy for canceling memberships once a member finds out your owner is enabling racism and mass murder?” A good question, and by good we mean patently ridiculous and maybe a little dangerous. Remember, everyone who supports border security pulled the trigger alongside the El Paso shooter.
Eichner, like the good little progressive pawn he is, made good on his call to boycott his little boutique gym, presumably expecting people reading Eichner updates on their computers to stop and applaud for the brave act. He tweeted, “Just contacted @Equinox to cancel my membership after many years.” Wow, what a sacrifice, Billy. I too had to forgo my avocado toast on Wednesday for the sake of inclusivity. Where’s my medal?
“Money talks, especially with these monsters," he continued, adding, “If it’s too inconvenient for u to trade one LUXURY GYM for another, then you should be ashamed. (No disrespect to the many wonderful employees at my local Equinox). Bye!” Well, seeya.
Chrissy Teigen, former model and wife to Trump-hating singer John Legend, got in on the boycott. She tweeted, “The gym is my personal hell but if you’re a member of Equinox perhaps it is time to say peace(out)-inox ayyyyy.” Whoa, look at those comedy chops. She added, “everyone who cancels their equinox and soul cycle memberships, meet me at the library. bring weights.”
Former Star Trek actor George Takei encouraged the boycott as well, tweeting, “Stephen Ross is the majority owner of the parent company of Equinox gyms. He is holding a big Trump fundraiser. Know where your money is going.”
SoulCycle immediately jumped to defend itself and distance itself from the politics of Stephen Ross. The company’s CEO posted a public message to Twitter, saying, “SoulCycle in no way endorses the political fundraising event being held later this week… Mr. Ross is a passive investor and is not involved in the management of SoulCycle.”
The company told hyperventilating customers, “At SoulCycle, we wake up everyday committed to our community, and creating a safe space where all are welcome. We believe in diversity, inclusion, and equality.” Safe spaces? Really? Ugh, actually, could we contribute to the boycott too, Mr. Eichner?
