‘Grow Up’: JP Morgan CEO Cautions Against Demonization of MAGA on CNBC

JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon stood up for former president Donald Trump and his supporters while discussing the state of the economy.

During a Jan. 17 appearance on CNBC's Squawk Box, Dimon suggested that there were many potential problems ahead for the economy and challenged co-anchors Joe Kernen and Andrew Ross Sorkin to take a second look at the front-runner for the GOP presidential nomination and his backers.

Dimon condemned Democrats for referring to Trump supporters as “deplorables” and characterizing them as hugging “onto their Bibles, and their beer and their guns.” Dimon asked the hosts, “Could we just stop that stuff and actually grow up and treat people with respect and listen to them a little bit? ... I do think this negative talk about MAGA is going to hurt Biden’s reelection campaign.”

Dimon’s remarks came during a discussion about the state of the 2024 presidential election and the Iowa caucuses. The Chase CEO listed several issues that he said Trump had been right on —  NATO, immigration, the economy and tax reform — and called on the media to change its approach to speaking with Trump voters.

Dimon said, “[Trump] wasn’t wrong about some of these critical issues and that’s why they’re voting for him and I think people should be a little more respectful of our fellow citizens and when you guys have people up here you should always ask the: 'Why?' Not like it's a binary thing: ‘You’re supporting Trump. You’re not supporting Trump. Why are you supporting Trump?’”

Kernan agreed, saying “It’s hard to hate 75 million of your fellow Americans.”

Beyond calling out Trump Derangement Syndrome, Dimon also warned Kernan and Sorkin not to assume that the economy would be “hunky-dory” in 2024 and 2025.

Dimon said, “I think it’s a mistake to assume that everything is hunky-dory. And when stock markets are up its kinda like this little drug we all feel. Like, it’s just great, you know, but remember we’ve had so much fiscal and monetary stimulation so I’m a little more on the cautious side.”
