The Washington Post reports on Friday's front page that Maryland Gov. Bob Ehrlich, a Republican, fired his appointee to the D.C. area Metro transit authority board after he said on a local public-access cable talk show that we shouldn't "proffer a special place of entitlement within the laws of the United States for persons of sexual deviancy."
Obviously, that special place of entitlement already exists in the political culture: Robert Smith was terminated for calling homosexuality "deviancy," even as he complained it has "nothing to do with running trains and buses." But the Post demonstrated its bias by suggesting that this catering to the gay left qualifies as "centrism." Reporters Lena Sun and Matthew Mosk wrote that Ehrlich for months now "has been working to position himself as a centrist."
One recent report about a political advertisement the governor is recording suggested that he is considering the line: "Bob Ehrlich governs not from the right or the left, but the center, where we are."
Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan, who with Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley is seeking the Democratic nomination to oppose Ehrlich, said that "Smith's hateful and mean-spirited comments suggest that he is unfit to serve the public, and his immediate removal is wholly justified."
Smith said "Homosexual behavior, in my view, is deviant. I'm a Roman Catholic." His comments were met on the front page by city council member Jim Graham, declaring "As an openly gay elected official...I cannot remain silent in the face of these comments." The Post also demonstrated its bias by burying Smith's actual televised comments at the absolute end of its story, paragraph number 24.
The Post is announcing on its front page today where America is headed: people will not be discriminated against for being gay. People will be discriminated against for being "anti-gay." Orthodox religion will be castigated as "hate speech" and punished in the public square. Liberals say they are "free speech advocates," but not when Christians speak out against sexual sin. There is no room for debate, only denunciation.
