When Pete Buttigieg claimed that the Democratic Party is the party of low gas prices, conservative commentary Mark Levin quickly responded with facts to correct the former Biden Administration Transportation secretary’s convenient “memory loss.”
“Gas prices are ‘temporarily’ high, says the president. That’s because Republicans are temporarily in power. Vote,” Buttigieg wrote Monday in a social media post, apparently dismissing the effects of the ongoing war to end the Iranian nuclear threat.
“Memory loss, Mr. Former Transportation Secretary?” Levin replied, reminding Buttigieg of both Democrats’ record and agenda regarding gas prices:
“Gas prices were through the roof under your administration. And you all wanted to drive it even higher. Lots of gas from you and your administration. Just the wrong kind.”
Indeed, as CNSNews has reported, when it comes to the cost of a gallon of gas (regular), the all-time high was set on June 13, 2022 during Biden’s presidency, when it hit $5.11. The highest price during either of Trump terms in office was $4.63, reached on May 11, 2026.
What’s more, gas prices held steady under Pres. Donald Trump (down four cents a gallon), but surged 35% during the 48 months of the Biden-Harris Administration. From January 2021 to January 2025, the average price of a gallon of gas (all grades) increased from $2.42 to $3.20, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
Buttigieg’s post was a reply in support of a false claim being promoted by Democrats that Pres. Trump recently said that he didn’t “give a damn” about Americans suffering from high gas prices.
In actuality, Pres. Trump was saying just the opposite - that he didn’t “give a damn” about fake news headlines claiming that he didn’t care about Americans’ suffering:
"I can just see the fake headlines: ‘President Trump is talking about all the money they're making while people are suffering at the pump.’ That’ll be the headline.
"But I said, ‘I don't give a damn, I'm gonna say it: We're making a frickin fortune. Our country is getting stronger and stronger all the time.’”
