“Oh, the irony is too much,” X.com Owner Elon Musk wrote Monday, responding to viral video of New York City Democratic Socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s plan to required I.D. to buy groceries, but not to vote.
The viral video from the previous Monday’s press conference shows Mamdani being asked about the potential of people buying food at a 30% discount from market prices at his planned city-run grocery stores and then re-selling that food for a profit.
When Mayor Mamdani turned the microphone over to New York City Economic Development Corporation Interim President Jeanny Pak to field the question, she revealed the I.D. requirement and intent to “manage who’s buying”:
“Yes, if you look at our RFP for the operator, we are looking to make sure that we target New Yorkers, whether it be [through] a sort of a library card-esque [system], and also, we manage who's buying and that it’s focused on everyday New Yorkers.
“So, we are mindful of that, and we're going to make sure that we have all the things in place to ensure that that does not happen.”
“Make it make sense,” Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity wrote, noting the hypocrisy of Mayor Mamdani’s opposition to requiring identification in order to vote:
“Democrats: voter ID is racist and the SAVE Act must be stopped. Also Democrats: you will need a ‘library card-esque’ ID to buy milk at Mamdani's government grocery store.”
