Open Thread: Should We Give S. Korea Its Own Nuclear Arsenal

That's the latest from Charles Krauthammer, who, in light of skirmishes between North and South yesterday and today, thinks we need to build up SK's nuclear arsenal in order to get the Chinese to reign in the Norks - which they are fully capable of doing, Krauthammer believes.

New York Times Skips Pro-Life March, But Sends Writer and Photographer

The New York Times has a funny way of defining protests as "news" or "not news" depending on who is being protested. For example, they've entirely ignored the March for Life against abortion in Washington in 2008 and 2009 (and in 2010, gave it part of a sentence). But in Monday's paper, they openly worried that a left-wing protest is dwindling in popularity. They sent Times writer Kim Severson…

WaPo, ABC Pay for Poll Question on Bristol Palin's Dancing Skills

It's fair game to discuss whether Bristol Palin arrived at the finals of ABC's Dancing with the Stars on talent alone (instead of being judged with telephone voting). But ABC and The Washington Post were Palin-obsessed enough to actually pay for a poll question on the matter. The headline in Tuesday's paper was "Poll numbers suggest Bristol doesn't have 'Dancing' legs to stand on."  (On the…

CNN Misinterprets Pope's Condom Remarks; NBC Offers Accurate Coverage

On Monday's Newsroom, CNN's Kyra Phillips gave a false impression of Pope Benedict XVI's recent comments about condoms. While the Pope stated that condom use "can be a first step...on the way toward recovering an awareness that not everything is allowed," Phillips stated that the pontiff "says condoms are okay sometimes." Refreshingly, Monday's Today show on NBC accurately covered Benedict's…

Time Columnist: New TSA Screenings a 'Minor Inconvenience

Columnists Michael Crowley and Mike Barnicle seemed to agree on one thing on Monday's "Morning Joe"  – the new TSA airport screening methods are not that big of a deal, in the scheme of things. Early on Monday's "Morning Joe," Crowley, Deputy Washington Bureau chief for Time magazine, expressed muted criticism of the American public's reaction to the new screenings. "I think that people…

LA Times Notes How Bureaucracy Bedevils Aspiring Chefs, Bakers

When it comes to business reporting, the media often tow a pro-bigger government line at the expense of the private sector. Profit-motivated businessmen are often portrayed as much less sympathetic than the allegedly altruistic souls that comprise the nation's core of politicians and bureaucrats. But from time to time, a news outlet does shine a spotlight on just how much of a pain in the…

Sarah Palin Blasts Katie Couric on Fox: 'I Swear to You, I Will Not Wa

Fox News is promoting tonight's interview with Sarah Palin on Hannity. She's declared she will not "waste" her time with the CBS anchor who drew all kinds of praise and even awards for pummeling Palin in 2008 (after going all cuddly with "close-talking, free-wheeling, ice-cream eating" Joe Biden). Hannity asked: "Would you even do another interview with Katie Couric?" Palin said she would like…

AP, ABCNews.com Omit Convicted Killer's Illegal Immigration Status, MS

Correction: My initial post incorrectly conveyed that Chandra Levy was an intern for then-Rep. Gary Condit (D-Calif.). She was in fact an intern for the Federal Bureau of Prisons. "Salvadoran Immigrant Ingmar Guandique Found Guilty of Murdering D.C. Intern Chandra Levy " That was the breaking news headline that was blasted to my inbox from ABCNews.com regarding today's murder conviction of…

Networks Hype GOP Division Over Palin, Claim She's 'On the Verge of Ov

On Monday, all three network morning show's eagerly highlighted former First Lady Barbara Bush voicing opposition to a Sarah Palin presidential run while suggesting the former Alaska governor has spent too much time in the public eye. As Harry Smith proclaimed at the top of CBS's Early Show: "It's all Palin all the time. But could the most famous family from Alaska be on the verge of…

Network Double Standard: Obama’s TSA Gropers vs. Bush’s NSA Eavesd

While the broadcast networks have generally empathized with the distress of airline passengers over the TSA’s new and intrusive airport searches, they have not — thus far, at least — gone so far as to impugn the Obama administration as launching a war against Americans’ civil liberties. Indeed, NBC’s Matt Lauer on Monday even sympathized with TSA Administrator John Pistole: “I hate to even…

Maddow to O'Donnell: Loved Your Murkowski Interview. O'Donnell to Madd

Such is the peril borne by the serial flatterer -- the flattery just might clang. That's what happened when Lawrence O'Donnell appeared on MSNBC colleague Rachel Maddow's show on Nov. 18 to discuss possible repeal of the don't ask, don't tell policy regarding gays in the military. At the end of their discussion, Maddow thanked O'Donnell and said this (video after page break) --
