It got really ugly this past week as anchors, reporters, hosts and celebrities blamed Donald Trump’s “racist” rhetoric for the mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton. The following are just a few of the ugliest attacks on President Trump, Republicans, conservatives and gun owners from journalists and celebrities in the wake of the mass shootings.

The first question on everyone’s lips was: Why? Why did that El Paso monster murder 20 and injure another 26? What could explain this evil? It didn’t take long to discover that the shooter had a four-page “manifesto” proclaiming “this attack is a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas.” And just like that it was Trump’s fault. One unfortunate result of the past few violent days is trying to decide who’s to blame for all the gun-related deaths and injuries that occurred in Texas, Ohio and Illinois. A particularly nasty clash involved Joe Scarborough, co-host of the Morning Joe weekday program on MSNBC, and Dana Loesch, a former spokeswoman for the National Rifle Association.

On Morning Joe, Joe Scarborough expressed the fear that no Democrat presidential contender has the force to defeat President Trump, whom he said reminded him of both Fat Bastard from the Austin Powers movies and of Mussolini. 

Since the candidates first began announcing for the 2020 Democratic Primary, MSNBC’s Morning Joe has dedicated much of its air time to defending them from being called “socialists” by Republicans. For months, the show’s panelists have focused on bashing President Trump and ignoring the wildly radical positions many of the candidates have taken.

Channeling Bernie Sanders on Wednesday’s Hardball, MSNBC’s Morning Joe co-host and Trump friend-turned-foe Joe Scarborough loudly pontificated about the “un-American” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) aka “Moscow Mitch” for not, in his mind, sufficiently pushing back against Russian meddling and trying to destroy the health care of millions.

If there was an award for most unhinged journalist of the Trump era, it would undoubtedly go to Donny Deutsch. The MSNBC contributor and host of poorly-rated Saturday Night Politics has embraced the politics of gaslighting in the Trump era like few other cable news pundits.

In an extended rant, Joe Scarborough calls Mitch McConnell "Moscow Mitch" no fewer than 14 times, with sidekick Donny Deutsch using the phrase twice.  Scarborough was angered that McConnell had blocked two partisan Democrat bills ostensibly seeking to promote "election security" in light of past and possible future Russian attempts to interfere with US elections.
