NewsBusters Podcast: The Media Don't Want to De-Escalate in Minnesota

January 30th, 2026 9:30 AM

Most Americans think the violence and hot rhetoric in Minnesota have gone too far, but the national media are mostly attacking the Republicans and ICE as if they're the only violent ones with the hot rhetoric. TV "news" stars get furious when you suggest Tim Walz or Jacob Frey or any other Democrat needs to tone down the wild Nazi talk. They don't want to calm it down.

NewsBusters managing editor Curtis Houck and CNS News managing editor Craig Bannister joined the show to discuss how the media breaks down the two sides into virtuous protesters who can never got too far and federal law-enforcement agents who've outrageously overstepped their bounds merely by showing up in a blue state.

ABC’s Good Morning America reacted Wednesday to a strange man who unloaded a syringe of a harmless liquid at Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) by tying him to President Trump, considering Omar has been a “frequent target” of the President as well as the source of “conservative anger.”

Meanwhile, new video surfaced of Alex Pretti screaming and spitting at federal agents and kicking out one of their tail lights. That's the guy Nicolle Wallace called a "nonviolent bystander."

At CNS News, Craig's been reporting on a number of wild-swinging social media posts, like the Virginia nurse who talked about how to give paralyzing drugs to ICE agents, or dropping laxatives into their food once you're lured them on dates. In Florida, a labor and delivery nurse was recently fired for a vulgar video in which she wished pregnant White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt serious harm. The X account Libs of TikTok noted nurse Lexis Lawler said “she hopes Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt suffers a severe 4th-degree tear during childbirth and has medical complications.” As in: "‘I hope you f**king rip from bow to stern and never s**t normally again, you c**t.’”

But you can't blame the Democrats for escalating the situation. On his show The Lead, CNN host Jake Tapper turned angrily on former Trump official Chad Mizelle when he suggested blaming Alex Pretti’s shooting in part on Tim Walz saying ICE is “Trump’s Gestapo” and Jacob Frey telling ICE to “get the F out” of Minneapolis. Tapper was so furious he accused Mizelle of hating free speech, and “You have a more of a problem with that than you have with people killing American citizens.”
