On Monday, the first weeknight after U.S. special forces terminated ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the network late-night shows didn't tone down their anti-Trump aggression one iota. On CBS, the Late Show with Stephen Colbert began with footage of D.C. baseball fans booing President Trump at the World Series, and Team Colbert imagined the crowd began singing a witless ditty changing the lyrics of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" to "Take Him Out of the Office."
Colbert clearly sees his audience as a passionate gaggle of bitter Hillary clingers:
Take him out of the office
Drag him out if you must
Go back to Trump Steaks and lousy hotels
Please take Eric and Junior as well
We all root, root, root for impeachment
If Trump's not removed, it's insane
For it's one term is more than enough, you're a shame, shame, shame!
After the show's intro sequence ended, Colbert thanked the soldiers for their victory, and then spent more than ten minutes mocking Trump's Sunday morning statement to the press. Over on ABC, Jimmy Kimmel spent more than six minutes making fun of Trump's Sunday appearance. NBC's Jimmy Fallon spent the least time on it, just congratulating Trump for not massacring the pronunciation of "Baghdadi."
After a commercial break, Colbert then returned to the booing at Nats Park. He proclaimed "the president was feeling so good that he decided to attend Game 5 of the World Series between the Washington Nationals and the Houston Astros," and joked the two teams were fighting over who would enjoy a stack of McDonald's Filet-o-Fish sandwiches at the White House.
COLBERT: Now this is rare, for him to go out like this. It's been a long time since Trump faced anything other than a crowd of handpicked supporters. [He clearly doesn't count the press corps as a hostile crowd.] And I have a feeling it's going to be a while until he does it again, because it didn't go that well. The crowd started off cheering our troops and then trump gets introduced. [Video clip of booing]
The president of the United States got booed while watching the national pastime. (Cheers and applause ) That is like getting kicked in the nuts by an apple pie. ( Laughter ) A great American moment. A great American moment! Made me proud! And the crowd add more for Trump than just some boos. They also had their own twist on one of his favorite chants.
He played chants of "lock him up," which were then immediately followed by Colbert's studio audience repeating "Lock him up! Lock him up!" It sounded like a CBS News staff meeting with Scott Pelley holding a bullhorn.
Colbert replied: "Wow, yes! Yes! Yes! Yes, they agreed with you! They want to lock him up! Put him away for life, or one baseball game, whichever feels longer."
