The Washington Post on Thursday celebrated another milestone in gender-bending history: "Isis," a native of Prince George's County, Maryland, who calls himself/herself a "woman born physically male," will be a contestant on the CW show "America's Next Top Model."
This, from the same newspaper whose Sunday magazine celebrated fabulous D.C. drag queens ("Long Live the Queens") and how they've suffered since the new Nationals baseball stadium ruined their neighborhood.
The Post was just copying from Us Magazine, and left out this tidbit:
Will she be a role model?
"I like to help people, but I'm here to follow my dreams," she tells Us.
The Post did include the typical praise from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. GLAAD boss Neil Giuliano hailed the casting of "Isis" as "an unprecedented opportunity for a community that is underrepresented on television."
GLAAD's "CineQueer" blog hails "Isis" as a looker: "she has legs for days and will surely give the other girls a run for their money." None of the media outlets had a real name for the contestant. On the CW show, they all use just first names.
Using the name "Isis" could be a drawback. Viewers disapproving of the contestant choice could easily call her "Is Not."
