Hack John Oliver Back to Protecting 'A**hole' Cuomo After Brief Show of Backbone

April 13th, 2021 12:07 PM

HBO’s John Oliver fancies himself a bold truth teller, standing up to those in power. In reality, he’s a Democratic hack who protects politicians in his political party. In February, he very briefly stood up to Andrew Cuomo, calling the liberal governor mired in scandal an “asshole.” But in the five episodes since, Oliver has spent a scant 47 seconds mocking the Democrat.

Cuomo has faced multiple accusers related to sexual abuse. He forced Covid patients into nursing homes and then covered it up. But that’s not of much interest to Oliver. On March 7, the host disposed of Cuomo in 4 seconds with this aside: “It's been a wild week, from Andrew Cuomo's scandals continuing to grow, to eight moderate Democrats killing a $15 minimum wage.”

On March 14, he did slightly better, managing a whole 35 seconds:

Here in New York, Governor Cuomo responded to the growing number of women accusing him of harassment -- including a new incident that's been referred to police -- by calling a press conference to deny those claims, and speculating about why many in his party have called for his resignation.

Oliver added, “That's the former HUD secretary, former New York attorney general, current chair of the national governor's association, and son of a three-term governor, claiming he's not part of ‘the political club.’"

Finally, on April 11, the HBO host devoted almost the entire show to nursing homes. But if you thought that meant Cuomo would really be hammered, you’d be wrong. Oliver made the Democrat the subject of a single joke totaling 8 seconds: “Our main story tonight concerns nursing homes, the absolute last thing you want Andrew Cuomo to be handling, tied comfortably with literally anything else.”

But none of this should be surprising for the partisan “comedian.” As I wrote on March 2:

I examined every episode of Last Week Tonight since the coronavirus started through February 21, 2021 – 33 episodes. The Democratic governor is only mentioned five times in over a year. All the mentions are brief and some are positive.

It only took 33 episodes into the pandemic for Oliver to really discover Cuomo’s incompetence. Additionally, in May of 2020, the hypocrite host promised to return to Tara Reade’s accusations of sexual assault against Joe Biden. In June, seven episodes later, he was still silent.

Last Week Tonight

JOHN OLIVER: Our main story tonight concerns nursing homes, the absolute last thing you want Andrew Cuomo to be handling, tied comfortably with literally anything else.

JOHN OLIVER: I would say that was the most ridiculous claim made this week, but here in New York, governor Cuomo responded to the growing number of women accusing him of harassment -- including a new incident that's been referred to police -- by calling a press conference to deny those claims, and speculating about why many in his party have called for his resignation.

ANDREW CUOMO: Part of this is that I am not part of the political club. And you know what? I'm proud of it.

OLIVER: Yeah. That's the former HUD secretary, former New York attorney general, current chair of the national governor's association, and son of a three-term governor, claiming he's not part of "The political club." It's like hearing David Miscavige say he's not a part of the Scientology club. Yes, you are. That's obviously false, we know where his heart is, which is a lot more than we can say about his wife. Where's Shelly, David? Where's Shelly? I'm sure she's fine.

JOHN OLIVER: It's been a wild week, from Andrew Cuomo's scandals continuing to grow, to eight moderate Democrats killing a $15 minimum wage.
