Angry Stephen Colbert Threatens Christie: This Is Your ‘Last Chance’ to Dump Trump

August 28th, 2020 11:50 AM

Once again, Stephen Colbert has given up comedy. Talking to Chris Christie on Thursday night, the Late Show host berated the Republican and demanded he drop his support for Donald Trump. An appalled Colbert sputtered, “I found out, literally, I just found out yesterday or today that you're helping the Trump campaign? Are you helping him prep for these debates?”

After Christie revealed that he was getting ready to assist the Trump 2020 effort, Colbert demanded, “Please don't.” The elitist host sputtered, “Every time you come on, we have a conversation, Chris Licht, my [producer] goes, ‘You like him.’ And I go, ‘You know, it's possible I might some day. He's a great guest and it's possible I might like him some day.’ And this is seriously endangering the possibility that will happen. I have hope I could like you some day.”

Christie shot back: “And the feeling is mutual. I feel like I could like you some day, too.” Missing the joke, the disgusted Colbert again demanded:

But here’s the thing. Okay? This is your last chance right now to get off the Trump train! Get off now! Right now. Before this interview, before he loses and the truth and reconciliation commission drags you off to the Woketopia before you have to confess your crimes! Not that I think he’s going to win.

Knock wood that he's President anymore. Who knows what's going to happen. But why on earth after the last four years, with where the country is now, with the dead people, with where the economy is now, what he has done to international standings and children on the border, why would you want to chain yourself to this anchor made of manure?

At the end of the interview, Colbert again demanded that Christie not help Trump.

COLBERT:  I would love to talk to you again sometime, but I do need to make one last pitch, one last pitch -- please don't help this man get reelected.

CHRISTIE: Will that affect my appearance on the show?

COLBERT: We'll see. If I find out you got that man elected you will be on the bubble. You’ll be on the bubble!

CHRISTIE: I'm the only Republican that will come on your show!

On Wednesday, the host raged that the lies of the GOP convention "will stick to your soul like hot tar."

STEPHEN COLBERT: When they said, “Hey, do you want to have Chris Christie on for the convention,” I said, “Yeah, we always have a good time together.” We always -- you know, there's some playful banter and some gentle disagreements over some fairly important things, but then I found out, literally, I just found out yesterday or today that you're helping the Trump campaign. Are you helping him prep for these debates?

...

CHRIS CHRISTIE: No, I haven't done any of that yet, Stephen.

COLBERT: But are you going to?

CHRISTIE: If asked, I will go in there and try to do the best I can to lend him some of my experience from before.

COLBERT: Please don't. Please don't because this is the fourth time you have been on the show, I think, is that right, fourth time, and, you know, every time you come on, we have a conversation, Chris Licht, my exec goes, “You like him.” And I go, “You know, it's possible I might some day. He's a great guest and it's possible I might like him some day.” And this is seriously endangering the possibility that will happen. I have hope I could like you some day.

CHRISTIE: Well, I'm not even going to go into responding to all of the different adjectives you used there, but I will say this, I'm not chained to anybody, but what I am chained to are a set of ideas that I believe are right for the country versus ideas I think are wrong for the country.
