FLASHBACK: NBC Worries to Sotomayor About ‘Constitutional System’ ‘Under Pressure’

September 7th, 2019 1:30 PM

Today show hosts are big fans of the very liberal Sonia Sotomayor. On September 4, 2018, the NBC show gushed over the Supreme Court Justice. Exactly one year later, on September 4, 2019... the NBC show cheered the Supreme Court Justice again. Last year, co-host Savannah Guthrie scored an exclusive interview with Sotomayor. Not specifically mentioning Donald Trump, she hinted, “Do you feel like our legal system, our constitutional system, separation of power, checks and balances, are those things under pressure today like they haven’t been in the past?”

Guthrie speculated, “I mean, the things you talk about, I think, will be good messages for anybody. One of the things you talk about, it’s almost a love letter to the rule of law.” The journalist suggested a hidden message: “Should we read between the lines there? You talk about the importance of the rule of law.”

One year later, NBC celebrated Sotomayor’s ten years on the court with a big cake. “We’ve got a Supreme Court justice. Come on! How great is this job,” hailed Al Roker. Co-host Dylan Dreyer enthused, “This is so exciting. It is time now to catch up with our next guest, sitting Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.”

Media Research Center senior analyst Kyle Drennen noted on Wednesday, “To date, conservative Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has yet to receive an anniversary cake on the NBC morning show and it’s hard to imagine Justice Brett Kavanaugh will being getting one to celebrate his one-year anniversary on the high court.”
