CBS Crew Reads Gayle King an Article About How Great Gayle King Is

June 13th, 2019 7:00 AM

CBS This Morning co-hosts on Wednesday read aloud the glowing praise for fellow liberal co-host Gayle King. Tony Dokoupil held up the style section of the Washington Post and quoted the gushing praise about the “soothing voice of reason.” King listened along as Dokoupil cheered, “I thought I might talk about a little article I found today.”

Not exactly showcasing his colleague’s modesty, he told viewers: “Not only does she have a Washington Post cover but a Hollywood Reporter cover. You’re our cover girl this morning. And a choice quote from the Washington Post article which I think sums you up well here.”

Dokoupil quoted from the praise and then King agreed with it:

TONY DOKOUPIL: It says, “Gayle King is an adult who isn't drowning in cynicism. A soothing voice of reason still capable of being let down by her fellow humans if only because she still has faith in them.”

GAYLE KING: I do! I do still have faith in them. I really do. That’s very nice of you, Tony. Thank you. Thank you very much. It’s unusual that they would both come out at the same time. But thank you.

As noted on Tuesday,  the Post article never mentioned that King was a Democratic donor.

Another puff piece appeared in the June 12 issue of the Hollywood Reporter. There, writer Marisa Guthrie told readers that King’s “overriding attribute is her humanity.”

King also told the Hollywood Reporter that “I definitely would like to have a role” in covering the 2020 presidential election:

Arguably the biggest story on the horizon is the 2020 presidential election. And with the morning shows (and The View) now must-stops for candidates, it remains to be seen how CBS This Morning will compete with experienced political journalists like Savannah Guthrie at NBC's Today and George Stephanopoulos at ABC's Good Morning America. King says she has not had time to discuss it with Zirinsky. "I definitely would like to have a role," she says. "But you know what, I want to get through the summer."

In addition to being a Democratic donor, King also vacationed with the Obamas and openly lobbied the very liberal Oprah Winfrey (her good friend) to run for President. Apparently, CBS doesn’t have a problem with any of this.

ANTHONY MASON: Who is on the cover?

DOKOUPIL: Who is that on the cover?

MASON: “The most natural person on TV.”

DOKOUPIL: The lovely Gayle King. Not only does she have a Washington Post cover but a Hollywood Reporter cover. You’re our cover girl this morning. And a choice quote from the Washington Post article which I think sums you up well here.

KING: It says?
