Okay, We GET It: Late Night Comedy Thinks Red America Is Racist

November 7th, 2018 9:30 AM

Is it any wonder half the country doesn’t bother with late night “comedy” shows anymore? On CBS’s Election Night Late Show, Stephen Colbert and a guest smeared Republicans as racist three times, comparing GOPers to the KKK. On NBC’s Late Night, liberal host Seth Meyers brought on comedian Billy Eichner to bash bigoted Texans: “But I want everyone to realize that no Democrat has ever gotten that close in Texas. It's Texas! You know?”

Eichner mocked, “Beto [O'Rourke] is not going anywhere. And we had a really great night. And I think, you know, when Republicans win, they go celebrating in the streets like racists start, like throwing parades for themselves. And we're punishing ourselves. But we had a really great night, so let's be happy for five minutes.”

Asked whether O'Rourke should run for president, despite losing in 2018, the comic cheered, "I want him to win everything. I want him to win best sporting actress. I love the man. He's magical. A lot of us haven't felt that way about a politician since Obama and I think Beto is going to be great."

Earlier, Eichner suggested that the only reason to dislike far-left Congresswoman Maxine Waters is, you guessed it, “racism.”

BILLY EICHNER: Now Maxine Waters is head of the financial -- what is it called? The financial committee which means she can ask for Donald Trump's taxes and I'm going to sit back and watchful.

SETH MEYERS: Yeah. I would guess that would be Donald Trump's least -- that would be his last choice for who would be in charge of the committee.

EICHNER: Yeah. He doesn't like her. Because he's a racist. Oh and misogynist. Sorry.

BILLY EICHNER: I got so many messages on social media all day long, on Instagram, Twitter, all these young people all over the country, young voters going to vote for the first time, going to vote in a midterm fo the first time, gathering with friends, and I was really moved. I'm not the cause of any of that. I think they are responding to things they see in the country that they don't think are right and just and fair.

And I want to thank all the young people out there who got involved for the first time. And I think they're going to stay involved and I'm seeing a lot of sadness tonight on social media from young people who really fell in love, rightfully so, with Beto. And I love him, too. But I want everyone to realize that no Democrat has ever gotten that close in Texas. It's Texas! You know? And Beto is not going anywhere. And we had a really great night. And I think, you know, when Republicans win, they go celebrating in the streets like racists start, like throwing parades for themselves. And we're punishing ourselves. But we had a really great night so let's be happy for five minutes.

MEYERS: I think one of the sad things is like up, a very charismatic candidate like Beto O’Rourke doesn't break through against Ted Cruz. Do you think with what you saw from him, a lot of people are talking about this now, should he run for president in two years? Is he a national candidate?

EICHNER: I think he is. I'm going to leave it up to him to decide, probably. I want him to win everything. I want him to win best sporting actress. I love the man. He's magical. A lot of us haven't felt that way about a politician since Obama and I think Beto is going to be great. Give the man a second and I’ll follow him wherever he wants to go.
