NEW NewsBusters Podcast with Tim Graham: We Bring the Numerical Smackdown to Cuomo

March 3rd, 2021 7:51 PM

There's a small boomlet in network stories on sexual harassment allegations against Gov. Mario Cuomo (D-N.Y.). But NewsBusters has been applying its research to underline how Cuomo's press -- especially on scandal of sending infected coronavirus patients into nursing homes -- is still being downplayed.

In the latest NewsBusters Podcast, executive editor Tim Graham elaborates on all the research:

-- A study by Rich Noyes and Bill D'Agostino found ABC’s World News Tonight, the CBS Evening News and NBC Nightly News discussed Cuomo in at least 401 evening news stories between March 1 and December 31, 2020, including weekends. Yet only two of those stories, both on NBC, made any reference to Cuomo’s nursing home order, for a total airtime of a mere 51 seconds.

-- A new Media Research Center poll found that due to the liberal media's bias by omission, one quarter of all voters have been left in the dark about this Cuomo nursing-home scandal. Once they were informed, those voters swung from 45% having a favorable view of Cuomo’s handling of the crisis, to a lopsided 65% majority having an unfavorable view.

-- Scott Whitlock described how HBO's John Oliver harshly denounced Cuomo as an "a**hole," but then on top of that, he reviewed 33 episodes of Oliver's show Last Week Tonight and found Cuomo was mentioned only five times over the last year. All the mentions were brief, and some were positive!

Then Jorge Bonilla of MRC Latino joins the podcast to discuss how Biden can get away with baldly stating that blacks and Hispanics may not know how to get on their computer to make an appointment for a COVID vaccine. If Trump suggested they were a bit dim, imagine the furor. Also, how the Spanish-language networks are doing Biden's bidding on the "kids in cages" issue, or oops -- the humane detention centers for migrant children. This drew much less attention than the arrest of a Mexican drug lord's wife, or "Mrs. El Chapo" for short.
